Getting Close

How do you make sure all the lights on a new scoreboard work? Trying the number 8 of course ;-)
One side of Dartmouth's board was lit up Tuesday as work continues on trying to have it ready
for the home opener against Holy Cross one week from Saturday.
The "lede" from a Butler Collegian story under the headline, Bulldogs sneak by Franklin:
The Butler football team will return home with a 2-1 record for its game against Dartmouth College Saturday after winning on the road against Franklin College, 31-28.
This will be Dartmouth’s first game of the season. It is Butler’s third. Butler’s game against Dartmouth will be the second time in two seasons the Bulldogs and Big Green have played each other. The Bulldogs lost on the road last season, 35-7.
“It’s exciting for our guys to play against an Ivy League team,” coach Jeff Voris said. “There is a huge unknown. It’s their first game. We have some advantages because we are at home and we’ve got some games under our belt but we have the disadvantage because this is a new team with new players.”
The Express-Times down in the Lehigh Valley has a story headlined, Ivy League's distaste for football scholarships may sunder scheduling ties with Patriot League.

The story includes this quote from Penn coach Al Bagnoli:
"There's very few need-based teams left for us to play. We have to decide philosophically how to proceed. I hope this isn't the last game between Lafayette and Penn but the Ivy League is caught in a no-man's land."
And this from the Penn coach:
"We have to decide whether we want to incur the expense of flying all over the country to play non-league football games. What happens (with the scholarship debate) will determine if we put Lafayette, Lehigh and the like on the schedule."
One of the great things about covering Patriot League football is the abundance of information that is readily available on the conference website. The Lehigh Football Nation site takes the Ivy League to task for leaving the media to forage for information on its own.
Cornell's game notes for its opener against Bucknell are up. One freshman makes the Big Red depth chart on each side of the ball with Alex Emanuels the backup center and Jackson Weber a backup outside linebacker. Freshman Chris Fraser is an "either-or" punter.
Penn's notes are up for Saturday's game with Lafayette and no freshmen make an appearance on the two-deep. Not a surprise is that Billy Ragone is listed as the starting quarterback. The fifth-year senior suffered a nasty ankle injury in the ninth game last year and coach Al Bagnoli had said the Quakers would bring him along slowly but apparently he's ready to start the quest for his fourth Ivy League title.
Princeton's game notes have been posted for the opener with Lehigh and the only freshmen on the Tigers' depth chart are punter Tyler Roth and longsnapper Pat Hall. Sophomore Kedric Bostic is listed on the second line at quarterback but that's misleading because the first line lists junior Quinn Epperly OR classmate Connor Michelsen.
As long as the subject is depth charts, another look at Yale's notes shows three freshman starters on defense and first-year players throughout. Slated to start are defensive tackle Copache Tyler and corners Spencer Rymiszeski and Foyesade Oluokun. Two more freshmen are lists as defensive backups including end Victor Egu, perhaps the most ballyhooed freshman in the league. On the offensive side Yale has four freshmen listed as backups.
