How Week 2 Went Down For Big Green Opponents

A look at how opponents fared yesterday with a pithy thought or two about each one . . .

Harvard 41, Brown 23
Story and stats
The Bears jumped out to a 13-0 lead after one quarter only to see Harvard explode for 28 points in the second quarter. Three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, helped Harvard run its home win streak to 14 games and stay undefeated when playing under the lights in Harvard Stadium. The Crimson is picking up not where it left off last year, but where it started.

Yale 38, Cornell 23
Story and stats
The expectation here was that Yale would have a very potent offense and that's the way it has played out. But wide receiver-turned-quarterback Henry Furman (29-for-36 for 353 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions) outdueling Cornell's Jeff Mathews wasn't in the tea leaves. Cornell struggling on defense? That's no surprise.

Villanova 35, Penn 6
Story and stats
The Quakers managed just 299 yards of total offense while allowing Villanova to pile up 546 as the Wildcats won for the 12th consecutive year in the city series. The Quakers turned the ball over four times and surrendered a 73-yard return of a blocked field goal for a touchdown in the first quarter. That Nova's QB ran for 132 yards while passing for 266 will make ears perk up in Hanover.

Princeton 50, Georgetown 22
Story and stats
Princeton's multiple quarterback system certainly paid dividends. Connor Michaelsen completed an efficient 19-of-28 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown and fellow QB Quinn Epperly ran for touchdowns the first four times he had the ball, the last a 59-yard gallop. The Tigers piled up their 50 points by the end of the third quarter.

Monmouth 37, Columbia 14
Story and stats
Columbia managed just 10 first downs and quarterback Trevor McDonagh completed just 11-of-33 passes playing for Stanford transfer Brett Nottingham, lost for the season a week ago. Marcorus Garrett had 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Lions, who saw the Hawks come within seconds of doubling their time of possession.

Butler 45, Jacksonville 27
Story and stats
Jacksonville found out what Dartmouth found out a week earlier. Butler is a second-half team. The Bulldogs scored 38 points after the break to win going away after trailing 13-7 at the half. Trae Heeter ran for 222 yards for Butler.
Check out BGA Premium for today for more coverage of last night's 31-28 heartbreaker against Holy Cross. With the postgame not finishing until 11 and the computer here at BGA headquarters not coming on until 11:30, it was a late night. . . .

Green Alert Take: A big boo-hiss to the Dartmouth student body for not being there when the Big Green needed them. A large (and late-arriving) student section helped swell the crowd Saturday night to 9,227 but with Dartmouth clinging to a 14-7 lead at the halftime the vast majority of students picked up and left. It didn't help that there was a concert slated for 9 p.m. on the "Gold Coast," but the migration was as astonishing as it was disappointing.
