Interesting Results

Excuse the lateness of the blog today. Pulled into the driveway at 4:02 a.m. Had predicted 4 a.m., which is a lot better than the predictions from the BGA's Fearful Forecast.

Now, without further ado, a look at how opponents fared yesterday with a pithy thought or two about each one  . . .

Brown 45, Georgetown 7
story and stats
John Spooney, the world's fastest man – oops, the Ivy League's fastest man as shown in multiple Heps sprint titles – ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries as the Bears built a 31-0 lead over the red-haired stepchild of the Patriot League on the way to a 45-7 win.

Fordham 52, Columbia 7
story and stats
Don't read too much into this one. Fordham (4-0) is really, really good this year with wins over Temple of the FBS and Villanova and two 52-point games. Of interest is that quarterback Brett Nottingham, the transfer from Stanford, was just 12-of-23 for 144 yards with two interceptions for the Lions.

Cornell 45, Bucknell 13
story and stats
Checking out how Cornell did is like looking at the PGA leaderboard. You see who's leading and then scan down to see how Tiger did. Or in this case, Jeff Mathews. He did just fine with 285 yards passing and three touchdowns. But this was tight game until Cornell got back-to-back touchdowns on fumble returns, one for 18 yards and one for 82 yards, four minutes apart in the third quarter.

Harvard 42, San Diego 20
story and stats
Quarterback concern at Harvard? Surely you jest. Connor Hempel threw for four touchdowns and 345 yards to lead the Crimson. Hempel was a super-efficient 25-of-34 with no interceptions and the Crimson won going away despite San Diego holding the ball for almost 13 more minutes.

Penn 27, Lafayette 21
story and stats
Lafayette is winless but it regularly gives Penn fits in this game. That Penn jumped out to a 27-7 lead and then had to hold on isn't the big story. No, that's not only is Billy Ragone back at Penn but he got it done through the air, completing 21-of-28 throws for 218 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Lehigh 29, Princeton 28
story and stats
A secondary that was expected to be a Princeton strength was riddled for 430 yards as an unbeaten Lehigh team that is making a habit of this kind of thing rallied from a 22-3 halftime deficit to win on a touchdown with 2:45 remaining. Princeton got 111 yards rushing on 13 carries from Di Andrew Atwater.

Yale 39, Colgate 22
story and stats
Tyler Varga racked up 39 carries for 236 yards and Yale quarterback Henry Varga Furman ran for three touchdowns in the first half before leaving the game with an injury early in the second. Yale was expected to be an offensive powerhouse but holding the vaunted Colgate attack to 340 yards and 22 points was a surprise. So is the Raiders being 0-4.

Monmouth 21, Holy Cross 14
story and stats
They rented portable lights and threw a party at Holy Cross and then the Crusaders threw up all over themselves. Holy Cross managed just 246 yards of offense against the previously winless Hawks and trailed 21-0 until the final 4:25.
