See You There?

Our local daily occasionally runs specials on full-page ads and Dartmouth took full advantage to promote Saturday's home opener under the lights against the Holy Cross Crusaders.
Kudos to Abby Cohen and Maddie Garcia of the Dartmouth staff for a column headlined More Than a Game. The lede to their well-executed piece points out a fact that some people in the ivory tower (Ivy tower?) would be well-advised to remember:
The first thing that comes to mind when people define an Ivy League school are high-caliber academics, when, in fact, the Ivy League was created as and remains to this day an athletic conference. We are all proud of the fact that we attend an Ivy League institution, but how often do we support the athletic programs that designate us as such?
The writers end the column this way:
We all have a lot on our plates, and we know that sporting events don’t appeal to everyone. However, it’s hard to figure out how the gym can be one of the most crowded places on campus, yet you never have to wait to find a seat to watch any team.
While we are guilty ourselves of sometimes thinking Scully-Fahey Field is too far away or that it’s too cold to sit on the metal bleachers, this fall we are going to try to ignore these thoughts and support our classmates during their senior seasons.
This Saturday is the first home football game of the season under the lights at Memorial Field. Let’s see if, as a student body, we can reverse the low attendance pattern at games and have just as many people cheering at the field as at the concert.
The weekly football polls are out and several schools of local interest are represented.

Now, not to take anything away from Sacred Heart, which after all went 2-1 in its recent series with Dartmouth, but over the past two weeks the 4-0 Pioneers have beaten Lincoln University (45-3) and Chowan (78-35), members of the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. They also have wins over less-than-stellar Marist (37-21) and winless Lafayette (26-24).
This is a new one on me. Eastern Kentucky completed a "kick pass" in last week's game against Morehead State. Turns out you can kick the ball to a teammate as long as it is caught behind the line of scrimmage. Watch the video and then click here to learn more.

Division III football in Texas is apparently a little different than it is around here. Check out the celebration of the opening of Cru Stadium at Mary Hardin-Baylor, which has just 2,926 undergrads. (The best parts of the video are before the game action begins and at the end. Oh, and if you are over a certain age you may want to turn down the music ;-)

With Saturday's home opener against Holy Cross not set to kick off until 7 p.m. and the weather expected to be picture-perfect it should be an ideal day for the second annual BGA Pregame Hike.

Last year a group of us hiked the South Peak of Moose Mountain, worldwide headquarters of Big Green Alert. This year you can make the call on which of two trails we will hike. Both are about a 15-minute drive from campus. Here are the options:

View from South Peak of Moose Mountain
1) South Peak of Moose Mountain in Etna, a rural village in Hanover. Plan on one hour to hike up, 15 minutes at the peak and 45 minutes coming down. We will come down the Harris Trail so you can see Dartmouth's Class of '66 cabin. Thanks to a trail crew, the view at the peak has been opened up to the east. If you choose this option we'll host an informal Q&A-type thingie with light refreshments and wonderful views here at BGA headquarters at the end of the hike ;-)

or

2) Gile Mountain across the river in Norwich, Vt. A gentle hike of perhaps 20 minutes each way, Gile is a heavily wooded knob topped off by a fire tower that affords 360-degree views and a few thrills as you head up the wooden stairs. If you choose this option you may want to pack refreshments and we'll have a Dartmouth-football-Upper Valley tourist Q&A when we come down.
The Gile Mountain firetower and the view from the platform at the top
Click on which hike you prefer and it will address an email with the appropriate subject line. I'll tally the results and let you know by the end of the day Thursday where we'll be hiking and how to get to the trailhead. Neither trail requires hiking boots or previous hiking experience. Sneakers will do just fine.

On last thing. I kind of like today's blog ;-). So you know, subscribing to BGA Premium helps support the blog, which comes to you 365 days a year. If you haven't yet subscribed – hint: it's always disappointing how few former players sign up – there's still plenty of time to jump on the Big Green 2013 bandwagon! There will be another story on the Premium site tonight and stories every day until the end of the season.
