Special Stuff

Given his national profile and all that he's accomplished, there's something wonderfully sweet about Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson Tweeting this photo of his late father Harry '77, a football-baseball player at Dartmouth.
The Mercury News in the San Francisco Bay area has a story about 6-foot-4 Dartmouth quarterback commit Jack Heneghan. From the story:
"If Stanford, Vanderbilt or Duke would have come courting Jack, he would have gone there," Menlo School coach Mark Newton said. "Jack developed later than some of the quarterbacks who signed with those schools. Jack had a great upside. Hopefully, he can start a couple years at Dartmouth and be one of those Ivy League quarterbacks who can keep playing after college."

The Sports Channel has named its All-American teams and just three Ivy Leaguers made the cut. That matches the Pioneer Football League for the fewest honorees for any conference.

By way of contrast, the Northeast Conference had eight players win some level of mention and the Patriot League six.

From the Ivy League:

First Team
DT Caraun Reid, Princeton senior

Second Team
DE Zach Hodges, Harvard junior

Third Team
WR Roman Wilson, Princeton senior

Other All-America selections of some interest to Dartmouth fans include . . .
• All-Purpose offense Rob Holloman, Central Connecticut senior (Dartmouth plays CCSU next year)
• DT Tracey Smith, Bucknell senior
• Keshaudas Spence, Sacred Heart junior
Dartmouth grad Adam Scheier '95 will be Bowling Green's interim coach for its bowl game but will not be the team's new head coach. Chosen to replace Dave Clawson was Eastern Illinois coach Dino Babers. (link)

Devon Wills '06, a tremendously talented and equally daring goalie for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, became the first woman ever to sign with Major League Lacrosse when the New York Lizards gave her a contract. Team owner Andrew Murstein quoted by Bloomberg.com:

“Lacrosse is already one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and this will only further accelerate that growth. Devon is a terrific young woman who is a great role model to female athletes everywhere.”
She is. But why does that quote leave me just a little uncomfortable about why they signed her?
