Here We Go – For Real

The Ivy League season kicked off last night in familiar style.

Harvard 41, Holy Cross 18
(Recap and links)
Playing without its top running back and leading receiver (among others), the Crimson used a big second half to bury Holy Cross (2-2) before a crowd of 15,132 at Harvard Stadium.

Listed as the third-team tailback, senior Andrew Casten carried 17 times for 153 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Conner Hempel was an efficient 11-for-13 for 137 yards with two touchdown passes as the Crimson erased an 18-14 Holy Cross lead with a 27-point second half. Turnovers on back-to-back possessions that Harvard turned into points doomed the visitors.

Hempel was on the field for just six plays in the first half because of back spasms but made his presence felt in the second half.

Holy Cross quarterback Peter Pujals was 26-for-41 for 233 yards but was limited to 31 yards on 14 carries on the ground. Leading tailback Gabe Guild, who had missed the last two games, returned for the Crusaders and ran 13 times for 44 yards.

Starting Harvard tailback Paul Stanton missed the game with an ankle injury while backup Semar Smith was out with hand injury. Zach Hodges had two sacks for Harvard.

The Bristol (Conn.) Press has a story under the headline, CCSU football looking for more points from offense against Dartmouth. (LINK)

CCSU coach Pete Rossomando:
"The focus is just on getting better at what we’re doing. We’re not putting in new stuff, just trying to execute what we do.”
“Dartmouth is a good team but I think we’re a decent team as well. Dartmouth is big and physical. They’re very disciplined. I wouldn’t call them a bend but don’t break defense, but they’re steady in what they do."

The local daily has an interesting story by the Dartmouth beat writer about his days as a ball boy for the Big Green in the '80s. (LINK)
From a Dartmouth-Hitchcock news release:
He’s not very big, nor very fast. But Dartmouth College football will have a new “player” on the sidelines this fall, and he may prove to be a big contributor to the team and to Dartmouth Athletics.
As part of a new partnership between Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Center for Telehealth and Dartmouth’s Department of Athletics and Recreation, a telemedicine robot will be on the sidelines for all five Dartmouth home football games this fall.

Have you entered the NextTitle18 contest yet? Check the post below this one to learn more and send in your entry. There's still plenty of time to guess the attendance for the chance to win a $100 gift certificate to Pine, the Hanover Inn restaurant, courtesy of a friend of the program and BGA!
And finally, there's still room for more if you'd like to join us for today's BGA Moose Mountain Hike. It's about an hour to South Peak and 45 minutes down.

Directions from campus to the trailhead, where we will convene at 11:30 this morning:

1. From the Dartmouth Green drive up East Wheelock (the road the gym is on), through the light and continue up and up until the road ends at a T, roughly 4.3 miles.

2. Turn left at the T (Hanover Center Road) and pass through Etna Village.

3. It's probably not even a minute before you turn right on Ruddsboro Road. (It's the turn after a big barn with a produce stand, and right before the village green.)

4. Follow Ruddsboro about 1.5 miles through a couple of S curves. Just past a house with a pond you will make a left on Three Mile Road, a dirt road.

5. Follow Three Mile Road about 1.5 miles. You may see a sign for the Appalachian Trail and a car or two parked on the left side but don't stop there. Continue another 150 yards or so down the hill to a widening of the road and park on the right. I'll already be there to make sure you don't go by!
