Saturday Wrap

Saturday roundup with a few pithy thoughts . . .

Harvard 40, Cornell 3
Quarterback Scott Hosch completed just 14-of-30 passes but they went for 244 yards and three touchdowns as the Crimson (4-0, 2-0) kept mistake-ridden Cornell (0-4, 0-2) winless. The Big Red gave up three interceptions and a fumble while managing just eight first downs and 192 yards of total offense. Cornell's Luke Hagy had a string of six consecutive 100-yard games stopped as he managed just 33 yards on 15 carries. Harvard won its 18th game in a row in front of 7,092 at Schoellkopf Field

Columbia 26, Wagner 3
The Lions (1-3, 0-1) ended a 24-game losing streak in convincing fashion, scoring 17 points in the first quarter and cruising to the easy win over Wagner (0-5) before a crowd of 3,210. Florida transfer Skyler Mornhinweg passed for 143 yards and ran for 74 as Columbia won for the first time since Nov. 10, 2012. Here's a really frightening thought: In two weeks the team Columbia hammered is playing at BYU.

Fordham 48, Penn 45
From the go-figure department, Penn surrendered 230 yards and four touchdowns to Fordham standout Chase Edmonds but was tied with the Rams until a 31-yard field goal with eight seconds left sealed the Quakers' fate. Just 2,847 rattled around Franklin Field as Penn senior quarterback Andrew Lisa proved his debut performance in relief against Dartmouth last week was no fluke by completing 24-of-37 passes for three touchdowns. Brian Schoenauer ran for 161 yards and three TDs for Penn (1-3, 0-1). No. 13 Fordham is 5-1.

Brown 25, Holy Cross 24
Marcus Fuller topped the 400-yard mark for the second week in a row, completing 33-of-50 passes for 412 yards without an interception and Alex Jette caught 16 balls for 216 yards as the Bears (2-2, 0-1) won their second in a row. Fuller drove the visitors 63 yards in 11 plays to set up Grant Senne's game winning 35-yard field goal with 2:06 remaining. Holy Cross (2-3) missed a 35-yard field goal on the final play that would have won the game with 4,673 looking on.

Princeton 44, Colgate 20
After a one-game hiatus in last week's downpour Princeton's (4-0, 1-0) high-octane offense was back at it Saturday. Leading just 16-14 at the break, the Tigers came alive with four lengthy scoring drives in the second half. John Lovett had just 49 rushing yards but he made them count with four of his 14 carries going for touchdowns in front of 6,457. The Tigers piled up 35 first downs, going 11-of-15 in third-down conversions. Colgate (2-4) saw a two-game win streak snapped.

Central Connecticut 35, Bryant 33
The Blue Devils (2-3) pulled off a shocker with a 28-point, second-half outburst lifting them past Northeast Conference favorite Bryant (2-3) with 4,379 in attendance. Tavion Pauldo completed 15-of-21 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns for Central Connecticut, which got 104 receiving yards and 90 rushing yards from Cameron Nash.

Sacred Heart 26, Robert Morris 13
Eight turnovers certainly helped the cause as Sacred Heart (3-2) picked off four passes and recovered four fumbles to win on the road before 1,142. The Pioneers held the second-leading rushing team in the Northeast conference to minus-seven yards on the ground.

Georgetown 38, Lafayette 7
Dartmouth's nonleague schedule isn't the strongest but the Hoyas (3-3) made the Big Green's out-of-conference opponents 3-0 on the day by thrashing the Leopards (1-5). Kyle Nolan had five touchdown throws for Georgetown w, which thrilled a crowd of 3,104 in Washington, D.C.
