Week One Roundup

Here's the Week One roundup:

Columbia 41, Central Connecticut 24
The Lions ran their string of nonconference victories to five, their most since the start of formal Ivy League play in 1956. They surrendered 320 yards through the air but held the Blue Devils to 45 yards rushing, forced three turnovers and recorded three sacks. Josh Bean got the start at quarterback and completed 11-of-19 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown. Dillon Davis also saw time, hitting 4-of-6 with one touchdown. Dante Miller had a 83-yard touchdown run for the Lions.

Delaware 27, Cornell 10
The Big Red opened the scoring with a field goal but couldn't put any more points on the board until recording a touchdown  with 26 seconds remaining. As advertised, Cornell played three quarterbacks with Dalton Banks (10-for-17 for 54 yards), Mike Catanese (5-of-7 for 57 yards) and Richie Kenney (4-of-9 for 30 yards) all seeing time. The Big Red was within 14-3 entering the fourth quarter. Delaware outgained Cornell, 391-232.

Harvard 36, San Diego 14
With All-Ivy League running back Charlie Booker out, Aaron Shampklin carried 15 times for 178 yards and four touchdowns as the Crimson bolted out to a 27-3 lead after one quarter and never look back. Devin Darrington added 98 yards and Justice Shelton-Mosley caught seven passes for 127 yards for Harvard. Shelton-Mosley also returned a kickoff 43 yards. Jake Smith was 13-of-21 for 195 yards with no touchdowns but also no interceptions for the Crimson.

Penn 34, Bucknell 17
Taking advantage of Bucknell  mistakes, the Quakers built a 17-0 lead five minutes into the game and played the Bison even the rest of the way. Penn picked off the first Bucknell pass and turned it into a touchdown. They shortcircuited the next Bison possession by recovering a fumble and blocked a punt on the visitors' third drive. The Quakers limited Bucknell to 36 yards rushing on 35 carries. Jack Soslow kicked 48- and 49-yard field goals for the winners. Ryan Glover played the whole way at quarterback for Penn, completing 12-of-21 passes for 138 yards and running for 48.

Princeton 50, Butler 7
John Lovett, the 2016 Ivy League offensive player of the year before missing last fall because of injury, returned with a bang. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tigers roared out to a 44-7 halftime lead before taking their foot off the pedal in the second half. Lovett hit Jesper Horsted with a 63-yard scoring pass on the second play of the game as Butler, which made national headlines earlier this year after a win at national power Youngstown State, lost for the first time. Charlie Volker ran for two scores for Princeton, and Horsted caught seven passes for 140 yards for the Tigers, who piled up 540 yards of total offense. Butler was held to 259.

Holy Cross 31, Yale 28 (OT)
Melvin Rouse returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, Alan Lamar ran 42 yards for a touchdown on the Bulldogs' first possession, and Yale followed with a 23-yard TD pass to take a 21-0 lead in the opening minutes. But Holy Cross answered with two touchdowns of its own in the first quarter to pull within seven, held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second half and eventually tied the score on a 30-yard Geoff Wade TD throw with 52 seconds left in regulation. The Crusaders won the game on a 45-yards field goal in OT. Zane Dudek ran for a career-high 217 yards for the Bulldogs, but was stopped a yard short of a first down in overtime.

FRIDAY NIGHT
Cal Poly 44, Brown  15
Brown started Michael McGovern at quarterback and the soph completed 25-of-50 passes for 312 yards with one interception. Cal Poly didn't need much passing, running for a mind-boggling 420 yards.
