In a column last week Bill Reynolds, the acclaimed Providence Journal sportswriter and Brown graduate, offered a spirited defense of Brown football coach Phil Estes, whose team is 1-8 after going 2-8 a year ago. Reynolds noted that Estes . . .. . . has won three Ivy League championships, finished second four times, and has finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 16 of his 20 seasons.The column includes this:
There’s little secret about sports at Brown, where if there’s success in football, hockey, and men’s basketball it’s usually about admissions and financial aid, not impassioned speeches during halftime, and what offense somebody runs.Which is why Reynolds uses one telling quote from Estes twice in the column:
