Founded in 1920, New Haven has 5,216 undergraduate and is actually located in West Haven, Conn.
The Chargers' colors are blue and gold and they play at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium, which has a capacity of 5,000. The stadium turf is blue. DellaCamera Stadium is 1.8 miles from Yale Bowl.
New Haven started football in 1973, going 0-8 in its first season and 0-9 in 1974 before defeating Curry College in the second game of the 1975 season for its first win. The first winning season was 1978 when the Chargers went 6-3 . They posted their only undefeated season a year later, going 8-0-1 in 1979.
Their high-water mark came in 1997 when they went 12-2 and advanced to the Division II national championship game. Their only losses were at IAA Western Kentucky (24-21) and in the national championship against Northern Colorado (51-0).
The best season in school history included a win at IAA Monmouth (49-3) and a 27-25 win over UC Davis whose quarterback was 43-for-64 for 482 yards that day.
The quarterback who set UC Davis records during the loss in New Haven? Kevin Daft, now the Dartmouth offensive coordinator.
After going 1-9 in 2003 New Haven shut the program down until it returned in 2009 with a 5-5 record under Pete Rossomando.
