Sunday Stuff

Following up on the post earlier this week about 2020 (we hope) Dartmouth opponent University of New Haven, SB Nation's Matt Brown takes a look in his personal column at the Chargers' potential move from Division II to FCS Division I. Among other things, he writes:
Think Tank suggested that UNH’s costs “will approach $200 million” to bring the facilities and Title IX department into D1 compliance. That’s a lot of money. Hell, it’s more than UNH’s endowment.
(For the record, per US News the New Haven endowment in 2018 was $72+ million.)

And then Brown takes this shot:
Geography doesn’t really seem to be in UNH’s favor either. The bulk of their athletic rosters, right now, come from the Northeast, a region of the country that doesn’t produce a ton of great athletic talent . . .
Green Alert Take: To quote the late, great Kathy Slattery, ouch babe.

The Ohio-based writer goes on:
I’d imagine a school making the D1 jump would have a stronger argument if they were trying to serve a market that was probably underserved in college athletic entertainment options…maybe a school in the deep south, where everybody is a college football fan, or in California, or elsewhere in the West. The Northeast would probably be the last place I would suggest.
Green Alert Take: He had to italicize last, huh?
The Big Green gets a mention in a story about Louisiana high school receiver Jack Bech picking Vanderbilt over a dozen FBS schools as well as Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Yale and Princeton.

Green Alert Take: Dartmouth gets a mention in a lot of stories about high school kids who eventually end up picking FBS schools, so why write about this one? Glad you asked. It's because seeing the name Bech and that he was from Louisiana I had a hunch that proved correct. With a little sleuthing I found that 6-foot-2ish Jack Bech is the younger brother of 5-9 Princeton dynamo Tiger Bech. While the Dartmouth coaches and others around the league are probably disappointed they didn't get BECH II, I'm sure every Ivy not named Princeton is glad he's not going to follow his brother, Jesper Horsted, Stephen Carlson et al. to Old Nassua. The kid can play. Check out his highlights HERE.
Speaking of commitments, graduating Dartmouth shooting guard Brendan Barry hasn't finalized his plans for next year, but the Garden State product who missed this season due to injury has an impressive list of potential suitors including Michigan, Pitt, Wake Forest and Temple per Fansided. (LINK)
EXTRA POINTS
We're thoroughly enjoying life in little West Newbury, Vt., described on its Wikipedia page as "3.5 miles (5.6 km) west-southwest of the somewhat larger village of Newbury." (For perspective, that "somewhat larger village" of Newbury is listed in its Wikipedia page as having a population of 396 in the 2000 census.)

Yesterday morning Mrs. BGA and I took a drive down to the village where the town librarian had collected books for those who had emailed her and left them outside the library door wrapped in envelopes with patrons' name on them. Pretty nice. In the afternoon Mrs. BGA joined in a village effort to phone every household in town to see if they needed help in this difficult time. To play off a quote familiar to Dartmouth folk, it's a small town and yet there are those who love it.
