Catching Up With Big Red

The Sports Illustrated site dedicated to the University of Washington has a story about the Huskies' new tight end coach Derham Cato '05Here's how the story about the onetime Dartmouth defensive lineman some called Big Red begins (LINK):
A team offensive analyst for the past four seasons, Derham Cato was asked to apply for Washington's tight-ends coaching vacancy last winter. It's a cushy job, always filled with great players.
Cato, surprised but willing to put in an application, knew all along that there was only one right answer he could give during the interview process.
I won't screw it up.
Here's Cato's bio page when he played at Dartmouth:

An interesting series of Tweets from Stadium's Brett McMurphy, formerly an ESPN Insider. He has Tweeted:
Most perplexing question for 2020 college football season is what does a conference do if all of its member schools can’t return students to campus in fall? One AD tells @Stadium his league will play on: "We can't afford for a few boats to sink the fleet”
And . . .
(The) NCAA Football Oversight Committee suggests 6-week period before programs can return to play.
From a CBC story about the CFL asking the Canadian government for money to help in light of a league shutdown (LINK):
"Our best-case scenario is we're almost certain to have to cancel games" (said (CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie) "But at worst if this crisis persists and large gatherings are prevented, we could lose the whole season and the types of losses we could incur would be devastating."
If the season is wiped out, Ambrosie said the CFL's long-term future would be in peril.
"One of the things, I think, that the CFL and all of us who love the league pride ourselves on is we're striving to be very optimistic," he said. "But to be realistic, the kinds of losses could have an effect on the future of this league."

Dartmouth is set to announce its plans for the fall quarter by June 29 according to the first of a weekly series of "conversations" with Provost Joseph Helble. He said:
"The challenge for us to figure out in the next two months is the appropriate model that allows us to bring the maximum number of students safely back to campus," Helble said, stressing that the priorities driving any decision include both protecting the "health, safety, and well-being of the community" and "ensuring the educational continuity for our students."
From the same conversation:
By the end of June, he said, Dartmouth expects to be facing a "roughly $100 million-dollar combined operating loss if you include the working capital portion for spring term and summer term alone."
Here's a video of the conversation:

From a press release accompanying the video (LINK):
The weekly series will air Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. for the remainder of the spring term as a forum for members of the Dartmouth community to ask questions and get updates from Helble and other campus leaders about the institution's priorities, decisions, and operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Next week's broadcast will feature two faculty members as guests.
EXTRA POINT
Here at BGA World Headquarters the TV comes on pretty much only to watch local and network news, Jeopardy and sports. We haven't watched a new network sitcom, drama or crime show in many years or a reality competition show in, well, forever.

Except . . .

Over the past few months we have enjoyed the entire Monk series, featuring Tony Shalhoub as the genius detective who battles obsessive compulsive disorder. Now that we've finally finished that series we're starting on another featuring Peter Falk as a genius detective at the other end of the OCD spectrum, Columbo.

I can't help but wonder if the creator of Monk was a Columbo fan who decided to flip the earlier show on its head.

Oops. We do watch one other show and that would be Frasier recordings when we head upstairs. And now that I think of it, I suppose it's time for a true confession. Don't tell anyone but in addition to Monk/Columbo and Frasier I will occasionally tune in to HGTV for a Househunters International. But remember, that's between us ;-)
