Well-Deserved

From the Dartmouth football office:

As a Penn State type I've been intrigued by the unlikely journey of quarterback Will Levis from lightly recruited Connecticut high schooler to Penn State backup, to potential first-round draft pick as a Kentucky grad transfer. Pro Football Network has a lengthy and detailed look at Levis HERE that includes this (italics are mine):

While other quarterbacks found immediate stardom, Levis took the longer road to prominence. Levis was a 4.0 student at Xavier in Connecticut and had offers from a number of Ivy League schools, including Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Columbia. But Levis wanted to pursue a D1 football career and signed with Penn State instead.

Interest from Dartmouth and around the Ivy League should be no surprise. His mom, Beth (Kelley) Levis, played soccer at Yale. His great-grandfather, Alva Kelley, graduated from Cornell and was head coach at Brown, and his grandfather, David Kelley, was a 20-year Yale assistant under Carm Cozza.

Speaking of coaches who have been around the Ivy League a bit, I stumbled across this updated list of stops for Don Brown, who has taken over the UMass program and will coach Dartmouth grad transfer Jalen Mackie this fall. Brown started his coaching career across the river from Dartmouth, began his college coaching career with the Big Green, and at one point was coveted by Yale fans to be their next year coach. Here are the stops he's made:

Hartford (Vt.) High School – Assistant Coach (1977-82)
Dartmouth – Assistant Coach (1982)
Mansfield University – Defensive Coordinator (1983)
Dartmouth – Defensive Coordinator (1984-86)
Yale – Defensive Coordinator (1987-92)
Plymouth State – Head Coach (1993-95)
Brown – Defensive Coordinator (1996-97)
Massachusetts – Defensive Coordinator (1998-99)
Northeastern – Head Coach (2000-03)
Massachusetts – Head Coach (2004-08)
Maryland – Defensive Coordinator/Cornerbacks (2009-10)
Connecticut – Defensive Coordinator/Cornerbacks (2011-12)
Boston College – Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers (2013-15)
Michigan – Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers (2016-20)
Arizona – Defensive Coordinator (2021)
Massachusetts – Head Coach (2021-current)

As an aside, Brown served as Yale's interim baseball coach in 1992 and helped the Bulldogs to a 26-10 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

A trip to the 247Sports recruiting site to see who Dartmouth coaches may (or may not) be talking to ended with the usual frustration. Seriously, it's hard to put much weight in a service that lists just six players in the Big Green's 2022 recruiting class (LINK) and offers up a list of all-time (at least since 2012) recruits that will have you scratching your head.

Here's the list with position per 247Sports, their high school graduation year and their composite rating. Active players are listed in green (LINK):

1. TE Jordan Kirkbride (2019) .8400

Green Alert Take: Guaranteed, you'll put less weight on recruiting rankings if you click through those schools.

EXTRA POINT
Yuck.

Pulling off my hiking shoes after my morning trip up the mountain yesterday I discovered a tick on my sock. Whether it had been hitchhiking on my pants leg and dropped off, or whether it came in on Griff the Wonder Dog and made its way to me, I'm not sure.

What I am sure of is that those little things are nasty and can carry Lyme disease. In the past when I found one I'd try to grab it with a tissue, smush it and drop it in the trash. Or flush it down the toilet. Or find something to use to crush it.

There's a better way.

One day when we were having a garage sale someone looking over whatever junk we were trying to unload found a tick on herself. She asked for a piece of scotch tape, slapped it on the tick, folded it over and voilá, it was clearly immobilized and immortalized.

You are welcome ;-)
