Photo Day

As usual, BGA Daily posted photos last week from National Signing Day festivities. Most were from Twitter and other online sources that had "share" functionality built in. Below you'll find a bunch more photos – some not previously posted pictures of the same recruits – at their Signing Day events.

Given that the Ivy League does not use or recognize the National Letter of Intent, have you ever wondered exactly what is being signed while their classmates are putting their signatures on what are essentially binding contracts? Here's an excerpt from what the paper in front of the Dartmouth-bound athletes actually says:

Dartmouth College is one of the top academic institutions in the world and home to the most successful football programs in the Ivy League. Our staff is very excited to have you join our Big Green family.

National letter of Intent (NLI) and early signing day events are held at high schools across the country on Wednesday, February 1st. The Ivy League does not subscribe to the NLI. Therefore, our prospects do not sign any form of commitment letter expressing their intent to attend an Ivy League institution. However, we do encourage you to participate in any signing ceremony for your schools or (that a) media outlet may offer. A simulation of a signing can be done.

Later on the sheet it reads:

You are now an ambassador for Dartmouth College.  . . .

And . . .

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Once again, congratulations, and welcome to Dartmouth College!

There's a place at the bottom of the sheet for the players to sign.

With that out of the way, here's a selection of photos from last week used with permission. (There are about a half dozen or so other previously identified commits who either didn't have Signing Day ceremonies or haven't posted pictures. Please feel free to send them along.)

Editor's note: Given that the college can't officially announce the full recruiting class until late spring, positions are best guesses and the town listed after the positions are in some cases the location of the schools and in some cases hometowns. I can't be sure which is which until the class is announced. Corrections and clarifications are encouraged!

EXTRA POINT
Can't take credit (or blame) for this, but a friend who occasionally turns to Harper's Index for his daily posts tossed this from Harper's on his blog several days ago:

Chances that a U.S. college graduate with a journalism degree regrets this choice of major: 9 in 10.

Green Alert Take: My undergraduate degree was in English and I will freely admit that while it helps a lot in Jeopardy and certainly didn't hurt my chances of being able to write coherent sentences, I sometimes regretted ditching math to study English. (Yeah, that was a pretty dramatic switch.)

Green Alert Take II: My graduate degree was in journalism and I have never regretted that.

Green Alert Take III: Given the plight of newspapers, it disappoints me to say there's absolutely no way I'd study journalism today – at the undergrad or graduate level – but it would be a good thing if more people who purport to share the news online these days would learn the important lessons I was taught in J-school.
