This And That

A 247Sports site has a piece headlined, Tracking every departure, arrival and roster change in Louisville football's 2023 offseason and one of those players is former Dartmouth offensive lineman John Paul Flores '22, who spent last fall at Virginia. Of Flores, the story says (LINK):

Former Virginia offensive line transfer John Paul Flores, who is also former All-Ivy League performer at Dartmouth, has one season of eligibility left at U of L. Flores spent four seasons at Dartmouth and then one season at Virginia. Flores started the first six games at left guard for the Cavaliers last season and played in all 10 games at Virginia. Flores was known as Virginia's Swiss Army Knife on the line - and was utilized in several positions, including center.

Still on the subject of grad transfers, I just stumbled across this interview with former Dartmouth corner Isaiah Johnson '22 following a 24-9 Syracuse win over North Carolina State last fall. Johnson went on to finish the season fourth on the Syracuse list in tackles with 53 to go with one interception and one pass breakup. He led the team in kickoff tackles and had a season-high nine stops in his first start against Clemson. Johnson has one more year of eligibility with the Orange.

This video is a little older but is well worth checking out. This is an "all-22" highlight package from former quarterback Dalyn Williams '16 senior season. Williams passed for 2,592 yards and 17 touchdowns with five interceptions for the 2015 Ivy League champions, completing 64.0 percent of his attempts. He tops the Dartmouth career passing chart with 7,548 yards with Jay Fiedler '94 next at 6,684, Brian Mann '02 third at 5,912 and Jack Heneghan '18 four with 4,900. Rounding out the top five is Conner Kempe '12 with 4,499.

Spotted this in a Steelers.com Asked and Answered column (LINK):

I was stationed with a fellow United States Army Officer in Korea named Bob Gay. He claimed to have graduated from Dartmouth University and played for the Steelers and maybe the Patriots, circa 1972. That made him a bit of a legend to have played, perhaps in a small role, but nonetheless a real live NFL player. I'm wondering based on your history and expertise, did he play for the Steelers?

ANSWER: I can find no record of someone named Bob Gay having played for the Steelers. It's possible he attended training camp, but if he never made the roster he would not show up as having been a player for the team.

Green Alert Take: For the record, no player by that name lettered in football at Dartmouth College.

Green Alert Take II: In the early days of BGA I came across mention of a European football player trying out for the World League whose resumé included starring at Dartmouth before spending time with the New York Jets. None of it was true. When I was the college's assistant director of sports information we'd occasionally get phone calls or have visitors looking for information on a friend or relative who supposedly competed for Dartmouth only to discover that person appeared nowhere in the college's meticulous athletic records. I still remember how diplomatic I had to be when someone called to get photos of her boss serving as a "rabbit" for Glenn Cunningham's world-record mile run at Alumni Gym. They wanted to include pictures in a display at a gala in New York City. As it turned out we could find no record of him running at Dartmouth. But Cunningham did actually set a mile record on a new wooden track in Alumni Gym, although it was quickly disallowed, ironically for the use of rabbits. Find an interesting story about the piece of history HERE.

EXTRA POINT
It wasn't until late afternoon yesterday that the plow guy came to clear our driveway of five or so inches of heavy, sticky snow. Once he was done I hopped in the car and drove to our little post office to get the day's mail. While our road had been plowed, the first mile-and-a-half of the drive to the post office is on our dirt road, which still has a base layer of snow. The last three-tenths or so is on pavement and that was already black and bone dry, which surprised me but shouldn't have. There's an old saying in these parts along the lines of "The blacktop shows before the snow slows."

That might be put to the test again with the forecast calling for anywhere from 6-12 inches more snow tonight.
