Quick Hits

Dartmouth quarterback Nick Howard will serve as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy from June 22-25 in what will be his second appearance at the famed camp. Howard and Colgate QB Michael Brescia, who the Big Green will face on Oct. 14, are among the nearly 50 quarterbacks working the camp at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La., this fall.

In addition to Howard and Brescia, the list of quarterbacks invited includes Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning of Texas, Drake Maye of North Carolina, Michael Penix of Washington, Cam Rising of Utah and Drew Allar of Penn State. The story featuring the list of quarterbacks attending the camp also includes this (LINK):

For the first time in the camp's 27-year history, Buddy Teevens will not help run the camp as a senior member of the executive staff. The Dartmouth head coach who helped start the camp with Manning when Teevens was the head coach at Tulane is in Atlanta, recovering from injuries he suffered in a bicycling accident March 16.

"It won't be the same without Buddy," Manning said.

Yardbarker has a piece with brief capsules of the NFL's all-time leading scorers. The top scorer in Kansas City Chiefs' history, Dartmouth grad Nick Lowery '78, is 18th on the list. From the story (LINK):

Lowery played the majority of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. The three-time Pro Bowler is the Chiefs' all-time leading scorer. It's obvious Lowery was a great athlete. But he also had brains — he's a Dartmouth alumni.

As seems to be the case at almost all lists of this type, Dartmouth will face a player ranked by HERO Sports among the top 50 returning defensive backs in the FCS. Coming in 21st is Yale corner Wande Owens. The 5-foot-11, 212-pound rising senior was a unanimous all-Ivy League pick last year and a second-team selection in 2021. (LINK)

EXTRA POINT
When Mrs. BGA and I drove our '84 VW camper to Colorado in the fall of 2020 we severely limited our side-trips out of concerns about the old bus breaking down and leaving us stranded far off the beaten path. Ever since, Mrs. BGA has teased about the lost opportunity to see the world's largest ball of twine in rural Kansas.

She was kidding, of course, but she has a point. And it's why I yanked the wheel hard to the right when we stumbled across another "World's Largest" while on an extended sortie way off the interstate in Ohio. This time it was to see "Big Muskie," the largest single-bucket digging machine ever built.

Per displays at the site, the thing stands 22-feet, 6-inches high, cost tens of thousands of dollars an hour to operate in power costs, could hold two Greyhound buses side-by-side, and "uncovered" more than 20,000,000 tons of Ohio brown coal during its lifetime.

Here's a picture of me in Big Muskie along with a shot on a plaque showing a local high school marching band assembled in the thing upon its dedication.

Check out a short video about Big Muskie HERE.
