Gearing Up

Per the FCS Coaches Poll Saturday's game in New York City pits No. 22 Dartmouth (5-0, 2-0 Ivy League) against No. 37 Columbia (4-1, 2-0).

The headline on Jake Novak's Roar Lions 2024 blog:

It's a BIG ONE

From Roar Lions (LINK):

There's no denying everything has lined up to make this Saturday's Homecoming vs. Dartmouth the biggest Columbia game, home or away, in many years.

And . . .

So this is the BIG ONE. If you haven't come to a Columbia game in a long time, this is a chance that doesn't come along too often. I know there's going to be a concerted effort to pack the place with the 2017 hashtag # cramKraft making a comeback on social media.

From a story in the Columbia Spectator after the Lions handled the Quakers (LINK):

“It’s not your father’s Columbia anymore,” (coach Jon) Poppe said, attributing the win to the efforts of his players. “These guys sacrificed and we have stars from that sacrifice, and that’s what’s making us a difficult team to play.”

#

For what it's worth, per the Sagarin Ratings the home field advantage helps Columbia be favored by half a point . . .

While Dartmouth was shut out in the Ivy League player of the week announcements after escaping Central Connecticut, Columbia had two honorees after winning at Penn for the first time this century. To get a better sense of who to watch on Saturday, here's how the Ivy League announced the players honored form Columbia (LINK):

From WCSC TV in South Carolina comes a story headlined, Nine Lowcountry players named to Touchstone Energy Bowl All-Star Game. From the story (LINK):

The list is headlined by Green Wave quarterback Jaden Cummings, the Dartmouth commit who has helped lead Summerville to a perfect 7-0 record so far in 2024 including a thrilling double overtime win in the Live 5 Game of the Week over Ashley Ridge last Friday.

#

A Pennsylvania high school football team had 38 players suspended because of an altercation and had to play their city league semifinal last week with just 11 players. To give their linemen a break, they actually played with just 10 players on defense. So what happened?

The shorthanded team went up 60-0 by the half and agreed to play six-minute quarters with a running clock in the second half on the way to a 68-0 win. Find a story HERE.

#

We all know – or at least most of us do – that Dartmouth was founded in 1769. Still, the first sentence of this headline is a little jarring when you think about it: The oldest college in New Hampshire is older than the country. Do you know what it is?

The answer, of course, is yes we do. There's nothing new or surprising in the story other than the impact of the headline. Find the brief story HERE.

EXTRA POINT
Yesterday was so beautiful in these parts that Mrs. BGA and I loaded up a small cooler, hopped into the '84 VW camper and drove a couple of miles to our town lake. While Mrs. BGA got in a run and read on the beach I popped the top on the VW, pulled out the table, turned on the MacBook Air and got to work on the Six Pack (And More) for BGA Overtime. (LINK
