Something to share around the water-cooler this morning:

That does, of course, deserve an asterisk given differences in FCS scheduling philosophies:

Dartmouth tailback Q Jones won the  New England Football Writers Gold Helmet for Division I/FCS for his 182-yard explosion in the win over Columbia. Find a Dartmouth release HERE and the NEFW release HERE.

Green Alert Take: I was a Gold Helmet selector for a lot of years and it always made me uncomfortable when I picked a Dartmouth player as the winner. I remember one year debating whether to pick quarterback Dalyn Williams before finally giving him the nod. I figured I was OK when I learned Dalyn had been named the national player of the week. ;-)

(And for the record, Q would have gotten my vote this week if I hadn't stepped away from being a selector this year.)

Green Alert Take II: It was frequently difficult to pick the DI/FCS player because there simply aren't that many schools playing at the level in New England (although there are more now than just a few years ago). Harder yet was picking the DII-III player because there are a lot of those schools and there are usually more than a few players with eye-popping numbers. I'm a little envious of this week's selector because this was one of those times when the DII-III pick was a slam dunk. This is from the release announcing a second Jones won that honor:

Damien Jones, from Fitchburg, Mass., and a St. Bernard’s High School graduate, racked up 222 all-purpose yards in the Nor’Easter’s 51-30 win at Nichols. Jones scored touchdowns on an 8-yard rush, a 62-yard punt return and an 84-yard kickoff return while adding 71 rushing yards on 11 carries (6.5 ypc). Jones is the only player in the nation at any collegiate level this season to have a punt return, kickoff return and rushing touchdown.

For the record, the "Nor'Easters" is the nickname for the University of New England teams. And it's a great nickname!
