Green an All-American

While Dartmouth linebacker Bronson Green saw more and more action as the 2010 season progressed the freshman wasn't officially listed as a starter until Week 8 against Cornell. Still, he finished the year with 51 tackles, fourth on the Dartmouth defensive list. For his strong play in his first season, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Green has been chosen to the Jewish Sports Review 2010 College Football All-America team.

Other Ivy Leaguers named to the squad were Penn duo of defensive end Drew Goldsmith and linebacker Zach Heller as well as Cornell defensive back Ben Heller.

A reminder that spring practice is slated to begin one month from today and run each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, culminating with the Spring Game on April 30 at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday sessions are scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m., with the Saturday practices at 10 a.m. Keep in mind the spring schedule is a little like the weather around here. From the football office: "Please note, practice dates and times are subject to change." The April 30th spring game is probably the least likely to change.

There probably aren't a ton of great college football prospects in Canada, but they do come along occasionally. Remember Harvard tailback Clifton Dawson? I've always thought Dartmouth should have an advantage recruiting in Canada that it doesn't usually have recruiting in the states. A coach can tell a prospect, "Come south for college where the winter is milder," or something along those lines ;-)

Turns out Dartmouth and Baylor appear to have been the top American college choices for perhaps the top prep running back in Canada, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound "speedster" from Kitchener, Ont. Ultimately, Tyler Varga ended up choosing to stay home and go to the University of Western Ontario. (story)

If you are curious about Canadian high school football, be sure to check out Varga's touchdown run at the start of this video from the Canada Cup last summer. The rest of the video is difficult to watch because of the distance the camera was from the action, but it's kind of fun to see the two 50-yard lines, the backs and ends in motion before the snap and the goal posts in the end zone. Canadian football, eh?

Varga was listed on Scout.com here. Oh, and by the way, he was an All-World choice and if you don't believe it, check this out. ;-)

The Dartmouth men's basketball team dropped a 77-55 decision to Princeton last night and has to beat Penn tonight to avoid finishing 5-23 overall and 1-13 in the Ivy League for the second year in a row. That said, it's instructive to remember that while Princeton is now 23-5, the Tigers were 6-23 just three short years ago. That's how fast a basketball program can be turned around when a school wants it to happen. And if you wonder whether Dartmouth wants it to happen, you might want to revisit this video and listen to what President Jim Yong Kim has to say at the end.

Olympic gold medal moguls skier Hannah Kearney is starting classes at Dartmouth this spring and the Burlington, Vt., CBS TV affiliate has posted a video of a remote interview with her from the green (it's white right now) in her hometown of Norwich, directly across the river from Hanover. Kearney does the best she can with some occasionally strange questions.

The defending Ivy League champion Dartmouth baseball team trailed powerhouse Central Florida just 3-2 in the eighth inning yesterday before the Knights (8-1) got a late grand slam and took a 9-2 win. The Big Green softball team was swept in a pair of games by St. Francis and Colgate.
