Feeling Super

With the Super Bowl almost upon us Yahoo Sports writes about perennial All-Pro special teamer Matthew Slater of the New England Patriots. Dartmouth gets a mention in the story HERE because Slater very nearly ended up in Hanover instead of playing at UCLA.

An old BOSTON.COM piece tells the story of the Big Green great who wasn't under the headline Matthew Slater almost chose Dartmouth over UCLA: "I actually committed to go to Dartmouth out of high school, and was dead-set on going there."

While the Big Green didn't land Slater at least his wife went to medical school at Dartmouth. ;-)
A reminder that Dartmouth has a strong presence with both Super Bowl organizations:

• KEVIN DEMOFF, former football beat writer for The Dartmouth and undergraduate radio sidekick of onetime Big Green radio play-by-play caller Rick Adams, is the Los Angeles Rams' VP and COO.

TONY PASTOORS '10, a former Dartmouth safety, is Demoff’s lead negotiator. (For a story I wrote about Pastoors as a Big Green senior – where he mentions he'd like to one day be the general manager of a pro sports franchise – CLICK HERE.)

• Former All-Ivy League linebacker and two-time Dartmouth captain BRONSON GREEN is Director of Strategic Operations at New England Patriots.

• And senior HARRY KRAFT wrapped up his career as a Big Green quarterback last fall.
Dartmouth's effort in leading the move away from tackling in football  practice gets a mention in a story in THE ATLANTIC under the headline The White Flight From Football: As concerns over brain damage lead parents to pull their kids from the game, many black families feel that their children have only one option.
Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens never coached Patrick Risha '05, but his efforts to make the game safer are highlighted in a story and video built around the onetime Big Green running back taking his own life. Read the important story and watch the video under the headline For the love of the brain: One mother's fight for CTE awareness HERE.
