As The World Turns

From the Dartmouth football office:

The report yesterday on TMG Sports about the Ivy League purportedly considering conference-only fall or spring football schedules has, surprisingly to me because it's hardly original, garnered a lot of attention. ESPN tried to get a meaningful comment from the Ivy League and could get only this statement (LINK):
"The Ivy League Council of Presidents has been meeting frequently via videoconference this spring. Should the Council of Presidents make a determination regarding the status of intercollegiate athletic activity at Ivy League schools, that decision will be communicated first to Ivy League directors of athletics, coaches and student-athletes, followed by the wider Ivy League campus community, media and public."
Green Alert Take: Gee, thanks.

While schools like Bowdoin and now Williams College call off fall sports Ivy League student-athletes may feel as if they are blowing in the wind, none more so than potential fifth-year seniors who, if the Ivy is going to cancel its season, might want to grad transfer in the fall. But to do that they have to finish their studies this summer. Or, if they aren't interested in grad transferring, they may want to wrap up their classwork in the summer and get on with the business of finding a job.

Dartmouth defensive back DJ Avery, who has a fifth year, Tweeted his concern here:

Back to the ESPN report. It also reprised this comment from Ivy League executive director Robin Harris:
"We're very fortunate in the Ivy League that most of our schools have iconic stadiums that hold tens of thousands of people. Our crowds don't necessarily reflect the size of the stadium. It's easier to have social distancing when you have a stadium that holds 60,000 and our typical crowd is not that. For us, the crowds are easy to figure out in a way, and our schools are certainly working on that as well."
Green Alert Take: I'll bite my tongue and let you have your own take.
The College Sports Journal bats around what some of the scheduling ramifications would be if the Ivy League pulls the plug on football HERE.
As noted earlier, Williams College joined fellow "Little Ivy" member Bowdoin and UMass-Boston in shutting down athletics this fall. Here's a headline that will get Dartmouth parents footing the bill for tuition thinking: Williams College Cuts Price 15%. Cancels Sports Due To Virus. Find stories HERE and HERE.

There's not much new but the local Valley News has a follow on Dartmouth's plans for the fall HERE. That story also notes that Vermont Law School, in (relatively) nearby South Royalton, Vt., will be holding fall classes online and will have first-year students starting their studies in January.
EXTRA POINT
I can remember as a kid looking across the street in wonderment because it was raining on the other side and not on ours.

Looking out our living room window this morning there was a welcome downpour drenching our oatmeal-colored lawn. But when I looked out another window? Nothing.

I went outside and stood with outstretched arms and had one hand getting soaked by a pretty heavy rain and one hand completely dry. Never have I seen the line of demarcation so crisp. I stood there marveling at it for a good five minutes before the rain stopped. Amazing.
