August Is Here

OK, it's Aug. 1 and even though the Ivy League doesn't usually start camp until relatively late in the month there's something about the calendar turning to August that says football is finally on the way.

Maybe that's why seeing pictures this morning of an FCS school kicking off practice for the 2020 season stung so much:

That's right. Southern Illinois is in preseason and the picture above is part of a gallery of practice shots the school posted HERE. The Salukis are slated to open at Kansas on Aug. 29.
From the Go Figure department: The NAIA has moved its championship to the spring but with this twist: teams will still be allowed to play games in the fall. How's that going to work?

From Football Scoop (LINK):
If they’re able to get a bunch of games in and go undefeated, will they be considered for the postseason in the spring? Early on, the understanding from coaches is that yes, teams that play in the fall will be able to compete in postseason play come spring.
Yesterday was the final day on the job for Steve Ward as the proud Marine who has run the Dartmouth football equipment room for a generation heads off to a well-deserved retirement on the golf course. He'll be missed by all of us but when the games finally begin you can rest assured he'll be there.

EXTRA POINT
Most days I get up sometime before 6 a.m., briefly check the news headlines on CNN and then scoot over to ESPN for 15 minutes or so of Golic and Wingo before digging into BGA Daily.

Yesterday was the final Golic and Wingo show, which is too bad. At a time when many sports talk show hosts scream at, and over each other – and you almost wonder if they are going to come to blows – there was a real family feel to G&W, and not just because father and son were on the set together. Feel the emotion as Junior talks about what it meant to him to work alongside his hero HERE and if you are a dad you might want to have a hanky handy.
