Something Different

A trivia question for you on another slow day: Dartmouth has had 10 games in which a back has run for 200 or more yards. Seven different players have accomplished the feat but only one has done it in back-to-back games. Who was that player?

Answer below.

Don't get too excited . . .

Surfing the Internet for material this morning I stumbled across a story on the Dartmouth Week site noting that "state officials" have given most Dartmouth fall sports "the go-ahead, but don't expect there to be any football games at Memorial Stadium until at least February." (LINK)

Despite the school name, and despite playing games its games at "Memorial," using a very familiar "block D," and going by a nickname once used in Hanover, the Dartmouth in question is Dartmouth High School, not Dartmouth College. The high school is on the Massachusetts coast about 60 miles south of Boston.
Per a story on STATS, of the 127 teams in the FCS there are 14 who either have games scheduled for this fall or hope to play. Most have two or three games set and all of them are playing at least one FBS opponent. (LINK)
TRIVIA ANSWER
While Nick Schwieger '12 had a Dartmouth-best three 200-yard games (one each in 2009, 2010 and 2011) it was David Clark '90 who turned the trick in back-to-back games.

Clark carried 30 times for 202 yards on Memorial Field in a 12-6 win over Brown on Nov. 11, 1989 in Week 9, and followed up with a school-record 51 carries for 219 yards in a 24-0 win at Penn in the finale a week later. The big finish allowed him to end the season with 1,063 yards.

Clark is one of just seven Ivy Leaguers ever to post consecutive 200-yard games. Here's some more 200-yard information culled from the conference record book.

Editor's Note: Apologies to anyone who belongs on the chart below for something they accomplished in the past two years. The Ivy League football record book still has not been updated since after the 2017 season.

EXTRA POINT
Scanning the list of "beach read" novels available online through our local library last week I found most of the books that interested me were unavailable. I put several that did interest me on hold, and continued poring over available titles.

After starting and then returning a couple that I couldn't get into, I decided I'd had enough. When I spotted one of the only John Grisham books available I clicked through to download it. I was pretty sure I'd read everything Grisham has written, but at the very least I least I knew the book would hold my interest.

I have to admit that even after finishing it I can't say for sure if I'd read it before. I'm not sure if that speaks to the author having been around long enough to write a bunch of books (Grisham has 40 novels to his name) or the reader being around long enough to read all of them, but it's probably both.

Either way, I enjoyed the book and the next time I come up empty looking for a beach book I'll probably grab another older Grisham or Michael Connelly, David Baldacci or Nelson DeMille, or a Harlan Coben or Brad Parks. (OK, Brad hasn't been writing all that long, but his stuff is good and hey, he's a friend ;-)
