Good News

From the SI Carolina Panthers site (LINK):

One of the many new rules this year in the NFL is that each organization has the ability to "protect" four players on their practice squad each week from being signed by another team.

This week, the Panthers elected to protect RB Reggie Bonnafon, OL Matt Kaskey, DB Natrell Jamerson, and K/P Kaare Vedvik.

Kaskey, of course, is the former Dartmouth offensive lineman.

It's easy to imagine what Dartmouth and other college football players were thinking last night when they watched the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans face off in the first NFL game of the season: Why aren't we playing?

The Chiefs and Texans are in the headlines today but you have to search a little more to find a story to remind yourself why the Big Green, Ivy Leaguers and so many others are on the sidelines this fall.

While there's now uncertainty whether DII player Jamain Stephens died of COVID-19, as originally reported (LINK), his death is a reminder that there are still a lot of questions that haven't been answered. (LINK)

Speaking of the NFL, I can't claim to have found this story myself but it's worth your time. A Denver TV station had a story last spring about former Penn football player and wrestler Steve Glasgow having three sons in the NFL including Graham, who earned a $44 million contract from the Broncos. Most Ivy League football players and athletes have no idea what their future holds. And then there's the Princeton women's lacrosse team, which does.

No fewer than 19 players on the traditional national powerhouse squad have opted to take a leave for the 2021 season. That leaves just 11 players on their roster. (LINK)

Green Alert Take: Hard not to think there are other Ivy League teams that will have a light bulb go off as they learn about what's happening in Princeton.

A 6-foot-3, 285-pound son of Nigerian immigrants who plays football on Staten Island is thrilled with his first Ivy League "offer" from Dartmouth. (LINK)

With no sports this fall Ivy League sports publicity offices have more opportunity to do the kind of in-depth projects that are impossible during a normal year. An oral history of the only Dartmouth baseball team to make it to the College World Series is one of those projects. It's well worth checking out HERE.

EXTRA POINT

That Certain Dartmouth '14 doesn't have a TV set but she has fast internet and so we were able to watch the NFL opener last night on my MacBook Air. There is something to be said for having a night football  game end before 9:30!

While the two-hour time difference is great for watching night sports, it's a bit of a hassle for doing BGA Daily. Sorry for the delay this morning.

(The game marked the first TV we've watched since leaving home almost two weeks ago. It's been a wonderful break from the election-year ugliness.)

We had our '84 VW poptop camper in for an oil change/filter yesterday in anticipation of our drive back to Vermont. Tomorrow morning we head a few hours to my sister's summer place on Lake Dillon and then begin the trek home on Monday.
