Fun Stuff

(Oops. Looks as if you are going to have to click on the YouTube link.)

We didn't get the New York Football Giants broadcast here so I didn't have a chance to see the Niko Lalos '20 interception live yesterday. There are a few different looks at it online and this one is fun because it shows the Dartmouth product knew exactly where the fixed end zone camera was, running to it to pose with his teammates.

Not surprisingly, given the play and the camera work, Niko's "pick" ended up here:

Screen grab from the 6:30 SportsCenter

Dartmouth sports publicity was all over the play, getting a release out yesterday afternoon that noted it was the first pick by a former Big Green player since linebacker Zack Walz '98 grabbed an interception for the Arizona Cardinals in 2000. (LINK)

His hometown Akron Beacon Journal writes about Lalos' debut and big play HERE and the Big Blue View site (LINK) quotes Giants defensive back Logan Ryan saying:
“I’m happy for him. First career start, an interception, a shout out from Lebron (James), I don’t think it gets better than that. He works extremely hard. Niko is there early, he’s one of the early birds, part of the early riser crew. He puts a lot of work in, and I think he was elevated today because we needed him, I think he was elevated today because of his work ethic every day on scout team, he plays offense and defense. I’m happy he was rewarded today, it’s a great story.”

WTOP radio has a story about former Dartmouth assistant Callie Brownson coaching the Cleveland Browns tight ends yesterday under the headline, Alexandria native makes history as NFL’s 1st female position coach. (LINK)

Sarah Fuller's squib kickoff for Vanderbilt Saturday, "went 'exactly where she needed to punch it,'" per now-former Vandy coach Derek Mason (LINK) and she hopes to keep kicking (LINK).

Green Alert Take: Maybe it's just me but I wish they had let her try to boot it into the end zone on that historic first kick. Seriously, the winless Commodores were on their way to a 41-0 loss to Missouri, so what harm would it have done if it had been run back?

While he doesn't show up in many of the growing list of potential suitors for the Vanderbilt coaching job, Princeton's Bob Surace did make it onto THIS LIST.

Green Alert Take: It makes sense that at least someone would suggest a successful coach who turned around a struggling program at an elite academic school as a good fit for Vandy. But the guess here is that Surace is too smart to take that cheese.

Dartmouth's decision to drop sports draws a mention and a photo in a Yale Daily News story headlined AD Chun: Despite millions in lost revenue, Yale Athletics has not discussed cutting varsity teams. (LINK)

EXTRA POINT

Email delivered a Cyber Monday advertisement offering Sony "Over-Ear Wireless Headphones Black (Open Box - Like New)" at "68 percent off." Instead of $113 they are being sold for $36. Never mind that with a little Googling I found the exact same set of "$113" headphones for $34.99.

No, what got to me was the "Open Box - Like New" thing. I guess there were thousands and thousands of those open boxes waiting to be sealed up and shipped out, right? Right?

Two thoughts. First, if there were that many open boxes it was because someone intentionally left the glue off the sealing machine so they could offer an "open box" sale. (Either that or they hired a bunch of teenagers free headphones if they'd each rip open a few hundred boxes.)

The second thought. Don't they have to seal the boxes to ship them to you? How do you know they were "open" boxes? And why does it matter?

OK, one more thought. Sales like this remind me of those fake discount outlets that popped up like mushrooms in the past 25 years or so.

There was a time when an outlet was just that, an outlet selling legitimate "seconds." You'd go looking for a pink Lacoste shirt with the iconic green alligator and sort through a ton of them to find the one where the stain that landed it at the outlet was where it wouldn't be noticed. Or the knitting imperfection was more minor than on the others. It was actually a fun treasure hunt.

Now? Now those "outlets" are every bit as bogus as the "Open Box" sale.
