Early Signing Period

The Early Signing Period that runs from today through Friday does not officially include Ivy League-bound athletes because the Ivies do not recognize the National Letter of Intent (below). That said, a good number of football players heading to the Ivy League will be listed in newspapers or take part in NLI ceremonies.

Here's the Dartmouth recruiting class with best guesses at position with the usual caveats about height, weight, etc. Corrections and additions encouraged.

Another indication of how ridiculous it has been trying to play football this fall from the AP. Italics are mine (LINK):
The annual rivalry game between Indiana and Purdue set for Friday was canceled for the second time in two weeks and the third time this season. Michigan’s game at No. 18 Iowa on Saturday also was canceled, the third straight Wolverines game to be called off.

From the Providence Journal (LINK):

A federal judge on Tuesday approved a settlement that calls for the reinstatement of two varsity women’s sports at Brown University and brings to a close a decades-long gender discrimination lawsuit brought by female athletes.

And . . .

Under the settlement approved Tuesday, Brown will reinstate the varsity women’s fencing and equestrian teams -- two of the five teams cut -- but it will be released from the 1998 agreement that university officials faulted as becoming “a significant obstacle” to its ability to offer women’s and men’s teams the competitive experience they deserve.

EXTRA POINT
The mercury (silicon?) dipped to 1 degree here this morning, the coldest day of the year so far. That sent me scurrying to our mudroom closet for the heavy artillery before heading out into the dark with Griff the Wonder Dog at 5:55 this morning.

For Christmas some years back Mrs. BGA gave me an LL Bean winter parka that was rated for sub-arctic temperatures. I'm sure it would have been fine for some people, but trying it on it felt disarmingly light and thin compared to the ratty old down coat I'd grown accustomed to over the previous 10 years or so.

After much deliberation, we sent the parka back to Bean and in exchange received back the one I wore this morning. If I recall correctly, this overstuffed down coat wasn't rated for temperatures quite as low as the first, but in this case I believe perception is reality. If I thought I was going to be cold, I was going to be cold.
