Names In The News

Former linebacker Gordy Quist '02 , former corner Trevor Nealon '02, and The Band Of Heathens are getting terrific press after the release of their latest album, Stranger. Here's a screengrab of a Rolling Stone piece shared by a Certain BGA Reader:

Here's an excerpt from the Rolling Stone piece:

There’s a certain familiarity to the type of rock & roll the Band of Heathens record, as if someone made you the perfectly curated mix tape of sinewy Rolling Stones rockers, aching Eagles ballads, and Gram Parsons weepers. It’s ironic then that the band called its new album Stranger.

Released in late September, Stranger is a warm, enveloping album with a positive message of understanding and compassion that’s just right for the times — call it “comfort rock.” The incongruous title comes from how the band members saw themselves while making the LP.

And here are the two former Big Green players in their senior media guide:

His Twitter feed doesn't say anything about it but NoleGameDay.com reports that former Dartmouth receiver Drew Estrada "is down to FSU, TCU and Baylor" for his final year of college eligibility as a grad transfer. He was expected to make his decision in early December. (LINK)

Love Story at 50: Your Life in Film | by Joseph Serwach | Pop Off | Medium

A piece in The Athletic (LINK) about the 50th anniversary of the tear-jerker movie Love Story includes a bit about Dr. Jack Turco, who a lot of Big Green football players got to know from his role overseeing sports medicine at Dartmouth until a few years ago. A former hockey player at Harvard, Turco appeared in a game sequence in the film, ironically scoring a goal against Dartmouth. From the story:
(Ryan O'Neal, as Oliver) Barrett then returns to the ice and assists on a Harvard goal, sliding a pass across the slot to a teammate who redirects the puck past the Dartmouth goaltender.
It’s (legendary former Harvard coach Billy) Cleary who makes the pass. The Harvard player who scores the goal is Jack Turco, now a doctor of endocrinology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.
For Jack Turco, his dream of becoming a doctor made it possible for him to attend both premieres. He had graduated from Harvard in the spring of 1970 and by that fall was in his first year of med school at Columbia University, and on an impulse he and some friends made the 29-minute subway ride to Times Square.
“There was a long line to get in,” he said. “We’re talking to these girls behind us, and my friend said, ‘You know, this guy is in the movie,’ and they said, ‘Yeah, sure.’”

The Stanford football team, like 6-5 Boston College and 6-5 Pitt, has announced it has elected not to play in a bowl game this year. The Cardinal is 3-2.

EXTRA POINT
After her name on Mrs. BGA's Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center business card are the letters RN, MS, CDCES, BC-ADM. I always laugh at that, as did Paula Poundstone, who Mrs. BGA knew in high school.

When the comedian did a show at Dartmouth years ago with Steven Wright, Mrs. BGA gave a business card to a security guard to pass along to Poundstone, letting her know how much we enjoyed the show.

A few weeks later a card arrived back from Poundstone addressed to Mrs. BGA with the letters ABCDEFG tacked onto her name. Pretty funny.

With the promising medical news breaking this weekend and medical workers among the first to be vaccinated I looked forward to a "V," as in vaccinated, being added figuratively to the end of the alphabet soup after Mrs. BGA's name. She and the others deserve that and much, much more.
