Burying The Lede

Following up on yesterday's chart featuring Dartmouth football's results against HYP in the last 20 seasons, today a look at how the Big Green fared against the "Other Four" in the first 20 years of former Ivy League play.

Pulling this chart together, I couldn't help but remember something former Dartmouth Athletic Director Seaver Peters said to me when Buddy Teevens was struggling in his attempt to get the Big Green program going again. This is not verbatim, but the essence of what he said was that it was easier for coach Bob Blackman because years ago there were only three Ivy League games each fall that the Big Green actually had to worry about. Clearly, none of them are on this chart.

In a story headlined, After an aggressive offseason full of significant moves, the New York Giants have arguably the most improved depth chart in the NFC, Pro Football Network looks at the Jints' depth chart and writes (LINK):

A UDFA out of Dartmouth, Niko Lalos saw his first action in Week 12 last season. He will have to compete for a roster spot this season.

Green Alert Take: That's no different from the way it was last summer. The difference, of course, is that this time he'll have some bonafides the doubters make take seriously coming into camp.

A current Big Green player we're yet to see on the field gets a mention in a Bama Insider story under the headline, Five-star QB Arch Manning already bracing for junior year. A quote from the latest Manning to set up under center (LINK):

"Last year it was film before games and we couldn't really meet. This year, it'll be more different. I'll take more of a leadership role with film and sit down individually with AJ and guys like that to work through things. (Dartmouth sophomore) Jarmone (Sutherland) did that with me my freshman year, so I want to take that leadership role. I think it'll be beneficial for everyone on the team."

Wondering if Dartmouth and the Ivy League should be playing football this spring? For what it's worth, another spike of positive tests as added 25 active cases of COVID-19 among students to run the current total to 35. (LINK)

Meanwhile, Cal Poly has canceled its final three games because it has just 49 healthy players. (LINK)

Also pulling the plug on the season is Chattanooga. That will cost former Dartmouth defensive lineman Seth Simmer a game because his Samford team was slated to face the Mocs on April 10.

EXTRA POINT
I learned last night that my all-time favorite Dartmouth football player has realized a hard-earned dream and gained admission to medical school at Boston University.

I know it's ill-advised to call one player an "all-time favorite," but this one is personal. As That Certain Nittany Lion '16's best friend growing up, future Big Green wide receiver Dan Gorman '16, practically lived in our house on the shoulder of Moose Mountain. I can't tell you how many nights he spent in the top bunk bed in TCNL 16's room but I can tell you he had his own toothbrush at our house. And when he wasn't at our place, TCNL '16 was at his.

I helped coach Daniel – he may be Dan to Dartmouth folks but he'll always be Daniel to us – in basketball and baseball and marveled at his control as a lanky right hand pitcher for our championship Green Machine Little League team. His catcher? That Certain Nittany Lion '16.

The first time Daniel ever saw Cornell's Schoellkopf Field came when we brought him with us to a Dartmouth game in Ithaca when he was a grade schooler. You might even see him wearing the Penn State hat he bought when he went with us to a game out in State College.

Daniel could have played three sports in the NESCAC but opted instead for Dartmouth and a walk-on role on the football field. He didn't see as much action as some thought he should have – after his senior season his teammates voted him the player who might have been most underestimated by the coaches – but he was the consummate teammate. I will admit I had my fingers crossed at the Dartmouth banquet his senior year when the announcement was being made of the winner of the Manners Makyth Man Award and I wasn't even remotely surprised Daniel heard his name called. His teammates got it right.

Daniel Gorman will make a wonderful, compassionate doctor and I couldn't be happier about him gaining admission to the BU School of Medicine. But that's not even the highlight of his spring. That will come in June when he marries former Dartmouth runner Maya Jarostchuk.
