The Coach Checks In

Mike McCune '92, a former All-Ivy League offensive lineman for Dartmouth and the longtime sports anchor at WCAX, the CBS television affiliate in Burlington, Vt., had a piece last night about the impending start of the Big Green's spring practice Saturday morning. He had Buddy Teevens on a video call and this is what the Big Green coach told his former player:

"There are guys that haven’t seen each other going on two years. Our sophomore class, in some cases the last time they were here was the fall of 2019. And then we had the seniors and the freshmen in the fall, and then sophomores and juniors at different times. There hasn’t been an overlap. . . .

"The other day I had freshmen stand up and they had never met some of the older guys. Everything that we do is kind of developing a culture and so forth so that’s going to be a challenge.

"Then we have an incoming freshman class. There will be people in the preseason who have never worked together, and don’t know each other, in a compressed time getting ready for a season."

Teevens punctuated that thought with a smile and this:

"But at least we are getting ready for a season."

He went on:

"It was a different world. Hopefully we never go back there but we did learn from it a little bit. Maybe the appreciation for our families, for our relationships, for our friendships, for our sport is going to hold over.

"We really do a pretty good job identifying guys that are unselfish and they work for each other and I think that quality of the individuals coming in is going to help us get to where we want to be maybe a little quicker than some others."

EXTRA POINT
The ratings for the Oscars Sunday night hit an all-time low with fewer than 10 million people tuning in and viewership dropping by 58 percent compared to a year ago. That certainly shouldn't have been a surprise. With no Billy Crystal, Steve Martin or Chris Rock to keep you laughing, a good number of high profile movies like the Bond film No Time to Die shelved for a year, and not many of us going to the theaters because of the pandemic, there wasn't really a compelling reason to watch.

Mrs. BGA and I saw just one movie on the Oscars docket last year – and that only because we took out a free Hulu trial. Not that we have anything to compare it to, but I guess we picked the right one, streaming best picture winner Nomadland.

Mrs. BGA gave me a gift card several years ago for admission to a number of movies at the Nugget in Hanover. I can't tell you how many movies are left on it because I don't even know where it is. That's how long it's been since we were in the theater. Here's hoping we have reason to dig up the gift card in the not-too-distant future. Maybe then we'll seem more than one movie up for an Oscar the next time the iconic gold statuettes are handed out. (Hopefully with Billy Crystal keeping us entertained between the boring speeches.)
