A Monday Look-Around

This is worth a look. "Hidden Gems" is a recently posted look  at one Dartmouth student's favorite places on campus:

Dartmouth has had a good number of other alumni go on to play professionally at other levels. A sampling of those names would include wide receiver Craig Morton '89 in NFL Europe, defensive tackle Derham Cato '05, defensive end Anthony Gargiulo '06, safety Garrett Waggoner '13, linebacker Flo Orimolade '17 and running back Ryder Stone '18 in the Canadian Football League, and quarterback Jon Aljancic ’97, safety Pete Pidermann ’10 and defensive lineman Nick Tomkins ’18 among others playing for a season or two on European  professional teams.

Speaking of NFL players, both Niko Lalos and Matt Kaskey have gotten mentions in the media in recent days.

In a "fact-or-fiction "entry on Giants.com there was a debate about this statement: Edge rusher is the most crowded competition heading into the summer. Lalos, of course, rose to prominence with an interception and a fumble recovery for the G-men last fall after being promoted from the practice squad. He'll have to battle hard for a roster spot this year with the team drafting edge rushers in the second and fourth rounds, signing two more as free agents, and bringing back four other edge rushers who were drafted in the second, third, sixth and seventh rounds per the story (LINK):

“That's not even mentioning returning players like Trent Harris, DeVante Downs and Niko Lalos who are scheme versatile, much like Brown and Coughlin. No other position group has this kind of depth. May the best man win!”

An ESPN story on the Panthers notes the current roster features 16 offensive linemen. From an overview of the team's personnel up front (LINK):

No group went through a bigger overhaul. Carolina used the franchise tag on (Taylor) Moton and signed (Cameron) Erving in free agency to compete for the LT spot that has seen 14 different starters the past six seasons. Don’t be surprised if draft picks (Brady) Christensen and (Deonte) Brown figure into major playing time to protect (Sam) Darnold.

Kaskey is among the 16 names listed in the capsule.

EXTRA POINT
They're late! Or maybe not.

In these parts they like to say "black fly season" runs from Mother's Day to Father's Day and that's usually a pretty accurate gauge of when the über-annoying little things are making life miserable in the outdoors.

The good news is yesterday was Mother's Day and not a single black fly disrupted our hike up nearby Tucker Mountain. The bad news is that Mother's Day can only be one day earlier than it was this year (always the second Sunday in May) and the black flies might just be keeping their powder dry for a few more days before going on the attack.

Don't know about New England black flies? You've got to appreciate a story that refers to them as "piranhas of the air." (LINK)
