Questions For Coach

It's time again for Questions For Coach!

Given how long it has been since Dartmouth football last played a game I'm anticipating you will have some interesting questions you'd like me to ask Big Green coach Buddy Teevens. As always, all questions will be asked anonymously and posted anonymously, so ask away.

Questions For Coach will lead off Saturday's BGA Premium practice report.

If you've got a question, email it to BGA by CLICKING HERE, or send me an email with the subject line QuestionsForCoach using the address most of you already have. Or you can use the contact form over there on the side.

Dartmouth will hold spring practice No. 5 today on Memorial Field and a report will be posted on BGA Premium tonight. A reminder that there is no "sign-in" necessary to access the site this spring and "sign-up" for the 2021 season won't begin until July.

And now for today's facts and figures . . .

So you want to be a director of football operations for a college? Fresno State’s DFO Mike McHugh offers up some insights about what that position is like at a major college HERE. What caught my eye in that story was this:

“You may make a $700,000 decision about what aircraft you’re going to fly in one minute, then the toilet clogs and you’re the one who’s gotta figure out who to call,” McHugh said. “That’s the range of decisions you make in this job.”

Huh?

Have you ever heard of what3words? Maybe I was living under a rock, but as someone who likes maps, travel and technology, I had never heard of it until yesterday. I have now and I'm flabbergasted.

Here's how what3words describes what has done:

We divided the world into 3 metre squares and gave each square a unique combination of three words.

That's right. They mapped the entire world into squares the size of a bathroom with each having a unique combination of three words to identify it.

Why three words and not two? Or four? From the site FAQS:

To make what3words precise enough to refer to an entrance or parking spot, it needed to be accurate to a 3m square. This meant we needed 57 trillion addresses to cover the world, and three words allowed us to create 64 trillion addresses – covering the entire world with quite a few spare! If we’d used only two words, we’d only have had enough for 1.6 billion squares.

In case you glossed over that, I repeat: precise enough to refer to an entrance or parking spot!

OK, now that you are totally confused, get ready to be amazed.

Go to the what3words website by clicking HERE and it will open a web page in a new tab. Up in the box with the three red slashes (///) type or paste in those three randomly assigned words I used to introduce this PAT:

airtime.practically.rooting

Now go down to the lower, right-hand corner of the screen where there's an earth logo and click on that. If you want more detail you can drag the yellow street view person onto the middle of the screen and navigate your way around.

Want more?

If you type your own address into the /// box and click on the earth logo you'll find those "3 metre" square boxes even identify rooms in your house.

No kidding, I can tell someone from San Diego to park their car at harnessing.progressive.earth and they will end up at the front door of our house here on our hill in Vermont. ;-)

Without a cell phone it doesn't help me but there's even an app that allows you to use what3words to navigate to any bathroom-sized square. In the world!

Green Alert Take: I apologize in advance for giving you an excuse to waste time today.
