Rankings

While awaiting the new and hopefully improved Ivy League football record book (not updated since the end of the 2017 season) I dug up all the Ivy League football teams ranked by the major services since 1970. Here's what you need to know before going on:

• AP and UPI Coaches rankings from 1970-1972 were in the "NCAA University Division."
• AP and Coaches rankings from 1973-1977 were in the "NCAA Division I."
• AP ranked the Top 10 in I-AA from 1978-1981.
• NCAA Division I-AA Football Committee poll ranked the Top 20 from 1982-1992.
• The Sports Network ranked the Top 25 Division I-AA from 1993-2005.
• The Sports Network ranked the Top 25 FCS teams starting in 2006.
• The Sports Network and Coaches Poll ranked the Top 25 FCS teams from 2007-2020

The Regula family (courtesy TrAk)

Placekicker Dave Regula '98 has a pretty unique place in Dartmouth and FCS football history, scoring a touchdown on his own kickoff against Penn. It happened after he kicked a 23-yard field goal, recovered a fumble in the air on his ensuing kickoff and ran it 32 yards into the end zone for a touchdown before booting the extra point. In other words, he personally accounted for 10 points in a handful of seconds.

But when it comes to athletic feats in his own household, Regula is looking up to his wife. Yesterday Lauren Regula struck out five batters in three hitless innings of relief to help the Canadian softball team to an 8-1 win over Italy at the Tokyo Olympics.

The left-handed sister of former big leaguer Jason Bay, who grew up in British Columbia, also competed in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics. A mother of three, she and her Dartmouth-graduate husband own TrAk Athletics in Fairlawn, Ohio. Find Lauren's TrAk bio HERE and Dave's HERE.

EXTRA POINT
I like to think of myself as a safe driver. Friends tease that I am a slow driver, which isn't quite accurate. True, I don't generally exceed the speed limit but I'll keep up with it if I'm in traffic. It's just that if there isn't any traffic I don't feel much need to hurry. I don't tailgate, always leaving plenty of room between my car and the one in front, which means I don't often have to use the brakes on the Interstate. And ahead of red lights I'll let off the gas and slow down with the thought that I won't have to stop and start again if the light turns green before I get to it.

All of that has meant I got pretty good gas milage in my Honda Fit and the mileage I'm getting in our new EV is another confirmation that my driving style is energy efficient. The car is listed with a 259-mile range. After learning my driving habits the range indicator when fully charged read close to 300 miles, which had me thinking the gauge needed recalibration. But after running the batteries down to 145 miles the indicator still showed more than half a charge. Even then, I wasn't ready to believe the range until yesterday, when we did our first charge at a paid site instead of our garage. That meter showed even after driving 150 miles we still had more than half the charge remaining.

I'm not foolish enough to rely on those numbers but they are kind of satisfying to watch.
