Meet This Man

This is from a year ago but perhaps because pro camps are opening Tuesday it bubbled to the surface on the NFL.com website several days ago:

Green Alert Take: You could pay a New York public relations firm the big bucks and not get this kind of splash for your money.

The local Valley News has a story and sidebar on Name, Image and Likeness with a look at how it has been embraced at Dartmouth. Interim Athletic Director Peter Roby is quoted in the main story (LINK):
“The idea that students that participate in intercollegiate athletics can monetize their name, image and likeness, I have no problem with that. That’s the stuff that the general student population can take advantage of. And so I have no issue with it fundamentally. My concern — like a lot of the concern that’s been voiced around the country within the NCAA membership — is how do you do this in a way that won’t create the additional ‘have-and-have-not’ gap that’s out there, with respect to college athletics? And how do you maintain some sort of level playing field?”

And . . .

At a minimum,” Roby said, “what we want the student-athlete to do is to let us know — hopefully ahead of any agreements — what they’re considering, with whom and what the expectations are in terms of what they’re going to be asked to do. Just so we can have a handle on it.”

Given that most Dartmouth athletes haven't competed in two years it's hard to gauge how the Big Green will take advantage of NIL. The newspaper doesn't mention much beyond the T-shirt giveaway gimmick from Barstool Sports although it did uncover one Dartmouth athlete who has capitalized (or at least hopes to) in another way. From the story:

Sophomore Josh Waters, from men’s hockey, has also found an NIL deal. He partnered with SidelineSwap, an online marketplace for used sports equipment. He promotes the site on Instagram and shares a promo code, and if anyone uses the code, he gets money in his SidelineSwap account.

Roby does have one concern that was noted in the Valley News sidebar (LINK):

(A)n aspect of NIL (Roby) wants to ensure Dartmouth student-athletes are aware of, is its potential impact on financial aid. The Ivy League doesn’t give out athletic scholarships, so any student-athletes not paying full tuition are receiving a need-based financial aid package, which is determined by total household income.

Green Alert Take: How often that will come into play is to be determined but it's a pretty safe bet agreements with Barstool Sports and SidelineSwap aren't going to be a problem ;-)
