Newsy Tuesday

Nick Howard, the running half of Dartmouth's quarterback tandem, was named the Ivy League offensive player of the week for his play in the win over Sacred Heart and Jamal Cooney was named the special teams player of the week for his punt returns against the Pioneers. Find a Dartmouth release HERE and watch the two honorees in the highlight package below:

WCAX, the CBS affiliate in Burlington, Vt., has a best plays of the week feature and Howard got the nod as the best of the best. Check out the story and video HERE.

From an ESPN story spun out of the Manning brothers' commentary during the Monday Night football game (LINK):

The Manning Passing Academy has seen its fair share of distinguished campers, but Matthew Stafford made a lasting impression back in 2008 when he "threw the tightest spiral."

Peyton shared that neither he nor Eli wanted to throw after the Los Angeles Rams star, with Eli joking, "I'm gonna throw after the guy from Dartmouth."

The Dartmouth QB deserved better.

Green Alert Take: That's what the late, great Dartmouth sports information director Kathy Slattery Phillips would have called an "ouch, babe" comment. If you don't take it personally, it's pretty funny.

So is this tongue-in-cheek response out of Hanover from Derek Kyler, who told me this summer how much he enjoyed his interaction with the Mannings at the MPA and spoke of the respect he has for them:

Former Dartmouth and Cincinnati Bengals great Reggie Williams is going to do a reading at William & Mary next week from his memoir, memoir, Resilient by Nature. From a Virginia Gazette story about Williams' appearance (LINK):

I asked Williams, what is the message he intends to convey to his audience at William & Mary.

“The message I intend to convey are inspirational stories of adversity survived and how love of poetry is an important part of the resilience repertoire.”

EXTRA POINT
Those of you who have been following along know that we bought an all-electric Chevy Bolt this summer, in part to take advantage of the power we are generating with our solar tracker. As you may have read elsewhere, the manufacturer is going to be trading out the batteries on all Bolts because of a rare incidence of fires. That's disappointing. Here's what is not.

I've been driving the EV for about two months now and last week on the way to the golf tournament I was doing PR for I pulled into a gas station for the first time – to get a quick breakfast. I have to admit feeling a little smug watching cars pulling up to the pump.

We have a "Level Two" charger provided free by our electric service provider and every other day or so I plug the car in for a couple of hours and that's all it takes. The car's range when fully charged, given my conservative driving habit, tops out at around 320 miles. And it has by far the quickest acceleration of any car I've ever driven. Not that I punch the "juice pedal" very often, but that capability is there.

The technology is obviously still being developed but even with the battery issue I'm never going back to a gas-powered car if I can help it.
