Wrapping Up Saturday

Valparaiso athletics posted the Beacons' postgame press conference after their loss to Dartmouth. Players and coaches for the home team called it the best crowd they could remember.

Here's how games went elsewhere around the Ivy League and for Dartmouth's nonconference opponents:

Princeton 32, Lehigh  0
Senior Cole Smith, who had three career completions to his name coming in, hit on 30-of-41 throws for 412 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jacob Birmelin had eight catches for 139 yards and one TD while Andrei Iosivas had 117 yards and two touchdowns on just four catches. Lehigh, now 0-3, has scored just six points in three games this fall after scoring 16 in three games in the spring. Attendance at Lehigh was 7,050.

Harvard 44, Georgetown  9
Crimson coach Tim Murphy tied Yale legend Carm Cozza for most wins by an Ivy League coach as he improved to 179-81 over 27 years. Aaron Shampklin exploded for 183 yards on just 14 carries and Aidan Borguet 85 yards in seven as the Crimson piled up 335 yards on the ground. Shampklin had a 59-yard TD run and Borguet had one of 56 yards. Attendance at Georgetown was listed as 2,509.

Columbia 37, Marist 14
Trailing 14-0 early, Columbia ran off the next 37 points behind a ground game that churned out 312 yards against the 0-1 Red Foxes. Dante Miller ran for 117 yards and Ryan Young for 95. Transfer quarterback Joe Green went 12-for-19 for 152 yards with a 69-yard touchdown pass to Ernest Robertson, who ran 17 yards for another score. Attendance at Columbia was 3,479.

Penn 30, Bucknell 6
The Quakers outscored Bucknell over the middle two quarters, 27-0, and limited the Bison to just 222 yards of total offense. John Quinnelly was 15-for-22 for 273 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in his starting debut for Penn. Bucknell has been outscored, 106-9, in an 0-3 start this fall. Attendance at Bucknell was 5,856.

Holy Cross 20, Yale 17
Taking over at the Yale 48 with 5:01 remaining, the Crusaders drove to the Bulldog 30 before Derek Ng came on to boot a 47-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining to help Holy Cross improve to 2-1. Yale debuted a two-quarterback system with Griffin O’Connor completing 15-of-28 throws for 234 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and Nolan Grooms running six times for 25 yards and going 3-for-3 for 18 yards passing. Attendance at Yale was 3,987.

VMI 31, Cornell 21
The Big Red was down just 24-21 until a 72-yard VMI touchdown drive gave the Keydets breathing room with 6:57 remaining. Big Red quarterback Richie Kenney was 18-for-47 for 273 yards and two touchdowns but the Cornell ground game managed just 80 rushing yards. VMI, ranked 20th in the STATS poll, is 2-1. Attendance at Cornell was 12,555.

Rhode Island 45, Brown 24
Leading just 16-14 at the half, the 3-0 Rams broke the game open with a three-touchdown third quarter to win the Governor’s Cup. EJ Perry was 38-for-63 for 345 yards with two touchdowns passing for the Bears but also tossed two interceptions. With another 190 yards on the ground Brown piled up 535 yards of total offense, exactly 100 more than URI. Attendance at Brown was 5,243.

Sacred Heart 21, Morgan State 7
With All-American Julius Chestnut awaiting a second opinion on his injured knee, Malik Grant stepped up and ran for 139 yards and a touchdown as the Pioneers improved to 2-1. Marquez McCray was 17-for-26 for 193 yards and one touchdown helping Sacred Heart run off 21 straight points after Morgan State opened the scoring. Sacred Heart plays at Dartmouth Saturday afternoon. Morgan State is 0-3 with losses at Tulane and Towson. Attendance at Sacred Heart was 4,626.

New Hampshire 19, Lafayette  13
The Wildcats improved to 3-0 but it wasn’t easy despite the defense holding Lafayette to 233 total yards. UNH quarterback Bret Edwards was 22-of-37 for 249 yards with two touchdowns to Brian Espanet while Dylan Laube was running for 79 yards, including a 50-yard TD jaunt. Carlos Washington added 75 yars on the ground. Lafayette is 0-3 after losing at Air Force and at William & Mary. Attendance at Lafayette was 2,623.

And some good news about a familiar name . . .

Former Dartmouth standout Drew Estrada saw his first action at Baylor after recovering from a muscle strain and caught one pass for 20 yards as the undefeated Bears pounded Kansas, 45-7. The catch came on the final play of the first quarter. Baylor plays host to Iowa State Saturday.
