A Couple More

To the list of Dartmouth football players entering the transfer portal add the names of tight end JJ Jones and linebacker Jalen Mackie. Jones is a fifth-year senior who had used up his Dartmouth eligibility via Ivy League rules. Mackie is a senior who writes: "I’ll be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer while maintaining my ability to return to Dartmouth for a fifth year."

Junior wide receiver/return specialist Jamal Cooney's Twitter description reads, “ST.Thomas Aquinas Alum | All-Ivy punt returner | transfer portal.”

Senior corner Isaiah Johnson's Twitter description: "| 2 year starter | 2 years of eligibility left | Potential Grad Transfer | 2x Ivy League champion | 1st Team All-Ivy,"

The latest offer posted by a Dartmouth player on Twitter is senior tight end Robbie Mangas hearing from Missouri State.

Green Alert Take: Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens endorses his fifth-year players taking a final year at another school and fully expected some of his seniors to investigate the possibility of taking a graduate transfer opportunity while reserving the right to return to the Big Green for a final season. No real surprise here. Just some smart kids keeping their options open.

The Ivy League's proxy in the FCS playoffs had a strong showing as Holy Cross gave fifth-seeded Villanova all it could handle in a 21-16 loss before 5,109 on the Main Line.

Patriot League champion Holy Cross had a 23-14 advantage in first downs, outgained the Wildcats, 347 yards to 281, limited the home team to 8-of-22 passing and had 14 extra minutes of possession time. The difference: Nova hung up touchdowns on all three visits to the red zone while the Crusaders were just 3-of-5 with two touchdowns and a field goal.

If you've been to Hanover and Dartmouth and you haven't been to Dan & Whit's general store directly across the river in Norwich, you haven't truly experienced the Upper Valley. Dan & Whits' slogan is, "If we don't have it, you don't need it," and for the most they are right. (If you stop by be sure to slip through the doorway at the deli section to open up the world of wonder in the back.) Here's what one reviewer wrote about the store:

You cannot tell from the outside, but this old general store is simply the most interesting place to shop in New England. It has everything! Besides being a topnotch hardware store, it has kitchen items, school and sewing supplies, garden and landscaping supplies, car items, etc. along with food. It's many rooms lead one thru a fascinating collection of things you always wanted but 1. didn't know they sold anymore 2. cannot find anywhere else. Just when you think you found the back of the store, you see stairs going down and find another whole world down there. It's a fun place to bring the kids too with a selection of simple toys you might have grown up with years ago.

Anyway, the community has come together to help the venerable establishment as Steve Hartman explains in a CBS On the Road segment HERE. It's a sweet story and well worth checking out. (As you might expect in an area like this we know some of the folks shown volunteering at the store.)

EXTRA POINT

Speaking of small-town stuff. . .

Do you think you have a full service bank? Try this on for size.

This is the inside our our local community bank showing just about the entire width of the "lobby."

That little container next to the chair? Here's a close-up:

That's right. You can buy your fresh eggs at the teeny little bank. As the note says, just "slide your $ under the door."

Keeping in mind our town of 2,160 is in a 692-square mile county with just one traffic light, here's a picture of the bank, which was closed for lunch when we stopped by yesterday:
