Gotta admit, this one took me by surprise. Consider this:
Former Dartmouth teammates Niko Lalos and Micah Croom began their college football careers together in the fall of 2016. Their paths have since diverged, as Robert Frost would say.
Lalos, a defensive end, hopes to be back with the New York Giants this fall for his third season in the NFL. Croom, meanwhile, will be suiting up for still another year of college football at USC.
That can't be right, can it? Yes it is. From his USC bio (LINK):
Croom, who moved from inside linebacker to defensive back in the spring of 2022, will look to compete for playing time as a defensive back and on special teams as a redshirt senior in 2022.
Croom, who will turn 25 two days before the Trojans' showdown with UCLA next fall, will be in his sixth season in a college uniform in 2022 and seventh year in college. Here's the breakdown:
• 2016 – Dartmouth junior varsity (did not exceed redshirt game threshold)
• 2017 – Dartmouth junior varsity (did not exceed redshirt game threshold)
• 2018 – Nine games with Big Green varsity as a backup safety and special teams player.
• 2019 – Sat out season
• 2020 – Transferred to USC and played in all six games as a backup safety and on special teams.
• 2021 – Moved to inside linebacker and appeared in all 12 games on special teams
• 2022 – Third season at USC

Head coach Buddy Teevens, meanwhile, is on the Teevens Tour, meeting with alumni, former players and Big Green fans. He's in Chicago today and will be in Los Angeles Thursday. He'll make a stop in Dallas next Tuesday, stops in Houston on Wednesday and in Jupiter, Fla., on that Friday, May 20. The tour wraps up in Connecticut on May 25. Back to the subject of transfers, Dartmouth men's senior basketball captain Taurus Samuels Tweeted yesterday he will be finishing his career at the University of Minnesota. (

EXTRA POINT
Last week Mrs. BGA and I took a hike and I spotted a bunch of this:
That's lichen, of course. When I was in junior high school I spent hard-earned money from my paper route buying that stuff to make trees and shrubbery for my "N" gauge model train layout. I could have saved my quarters heading out into the woods in these parts ;-)
Oh, and on Sunday Mrs. BGA and I went on the "Daffodil Walk" a fellow living on a remote hillside near here hosts each year. His flora was a lot prettier than the lichen as this snap by Mrs. BGA shows. The fellow had a dizzying assortment of different kinds of daffodils on winding paths through his property. He even had someone playing a flute while we strolled, giving the tour an ethereal quality.
