Last month the Denver Post had a story quoting Buddy Teevens talking about new Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, whose career really started to gain traction under the current Dartmouth head coach back when he ran the show at Stanford. (LINK)
Flash forward and now it's the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writing about how Omar Khan, now at the "top of the Steelers' front office" got his start volunteering for Teevens when he was at Tulane. From the story (LINK):
(W)hen Teevens needed the locker rooms painted, Khan drew the assignment. When equipment from buses had to be unloaded, Khan did that, too. No task was too big or too small.
Soon, Teevens discovered he could assign Khan just about anything, and he’d carry out the task to completion better than anyone else in the department.
“I told him, ‘I can’t pay you,’ but that didn’t matter to Omar,” Teevens said. “So we found an empty closet, put a desk in there and that turned into his office. He had a wonderful personality with people. We just kept expanding his responsibilities.
“After a couple of years I went to Bill Kuharich, who was the GM of the Saints at the time and told him we have this guy who does everything. He’s a New Orleans kid. I don’t know what you’re going to do with him, but you should hire him.”
Who's next?
FootballScoop has pulled together an exhaustive list of names for its Minority Watch List/Rising Stars posting and two of the names coached under Teevens at Dartmouth.
Included are Oklahoma defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux and LSU receivers coach Cortez Hankton, who was an unproven commodity when he came to Hanover but someone Teevens correctly predicted was headed for the big-time.
Also included on the FootballScoop list are Harvard running backs coach Saj Thakkr, Yale defensive backs coach Jay Anderson and Cornell defensive line coach Satyen Bhakta.
