The Pantagraph, which serves central Illinois, catches us up on former Dartmouth running back Clint Soper '03, now a language arts teacher at Roanoke-Benson High School, just a half hour or so from where he grew up. The Q&A notes that Soper, whose Dartmouth career fell victim to three season-ending injuries, is now into Kendo, a form of Japanese fencing. He says: "I love kendo because of the discipline, the competition, the etiquette, the exercise -- and the yelling. It's hyper-aggressive and kinetic. As a former football player, I enjoy the contact." (LINK)

Without an Ivy League team in the FCS playoffs we're in luck this week. With cross-state rival New Hampshire (9-3) playing old friend Holy Cross (11-0) Saturday at noon we have two proxies in the national championship race, and so will have someone to root for in another week. For what it's worth, The Analyst's Craig Haley picks the homestanding Crusaders in a barn-burner. (LINK)

Any chance that newly announced Cornell athletic director Nicki Moore will add her voice to those of others in the Ivy League calling for equal opportunity for football players? Moore comes to Cornell from Colgate, which defeated No. 6 James Madison in the first round of the 2018 FCS playoffs at Andy Kerr Stadium to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals during her first year heading up the Raider athletic program. EXTRA POINT
With the calendar turning to December and a powdered-sugar sprinkling of snow on the lawn this morning it's about time I get those orange reflective marker poles into the ground on either side of our driveway. Given the rain we had yesterday and plunging overnight temperature the "frozen tundra" won't allow me to push the poles into the ground, and they are way too bendy to hammer. My solution? The cordless drill and some long bits. Wish me luck – or there better be a thaw this weekend!
