This one about a Preferred Walk-On at Penn State who intends to be pre-med hits close to home for me. From the Tribune-Democrat out of Johnstown, Pa. (LINK):

His success on the track really opened opportunities for (Ethan) Black, who as a junior won the PIAA Class 2A championship in both the 100- (10.78) and 200-meter dashes (21.45).

His speed just separates him,” (Coach Tony) Penna added. “That elite speed makes all the difference in the world. Matched with his work ethic, I think he’s going to earn himself a shot to make an impact at Penn State.”

Black, a 2022 Tribune-Democrat all-area first-team football selection, also considered Dartmouth on a football scholarship.

Green Alert Take: If the football scholarship piece catches the eye so should the speed. The kid's 100 PR is 10.63 and that would have looked good running patterns on Memorial Field.

#

The Athletic has a story about why two of the most prominent names in college football this year are ineligible for the College Football Hall of Fame. From the story headlined Why Stetson Bennett, Mike Leach and others wouldn’t make CFB Hall of Fame: ‘We have rules’ (LINK):

Stetson Bennett is a two-time national champion, was the offensive MVP of four College Football Playoff games and was a Heisman Trophy finalist. And yet he is not deemed eligible for the Hall because he was never a first-team All-American.

Mike Leach, who died in December, helped revolutionize college football with the Air Raid offense and won a lot of games at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State. But his career winning percentage — .592 — barely falls below the .600 winning percentage required by the Hall.

Green Alert Take: I'm not crazy about reading my own stuff or reposting it, but that story had me sorting through the BGA archives to find something I wrote last year that touches on some of the same issues:

If you have been around a bit, you are probably wondering why (Princeton running back great) Keith Elias is on the ballot and former Dartmouth quarterback Jay Fiedler is not when the pair were the yin and yang of Ivy League football in the early '90s. The future NFL players had a rivalry the likes of which the Ancient Eight may not have seen since. So why is Elias up for the Hall and Fiedler isn't? It's simple. One of the qualifications as noted in the intro to the Hall of Fame story:

"First and foremost, a player must have received First-Team All-America recognition by a selector that is recognized by the NCAA and utilized to comprise its consensus All-America teams.

Elias was first-team All-American. Fiedler was a third-team AP All-American and honorable-mention Sports Network pick.

Green Alert Take II: Back on the subject of bias. Quarterbacks aren't usually on the short end when it comes to recognition but in this instance that's the case. A look at the 2021 AP FCS All-America team shows two running backs and three wide receivers on the first team but just one quarterback. Your chances of making first team are twice as good as a running back and three times as good as a wide receiver.

Green Alert Take III: It says here that Elias, who always expressed great respect for Fiedler, would be the first to say the Dartmouth quarterback is every bit as deserving as he for the Hall of Fame.

#

The quarterback sneak hasn't been a big part of the Dartmouth playbook with the QB rarely under center but don't be surprised if that changes here at some point, and across all of college football with the Bush Push legal. Axios posted this note today about fourth-and-one (or less) play calls in the NFL:

82.8% of sneaks this season resulted in either a first down or TD, compared to a 62.5% success rate on standard rushing plays on fourth-and-1.

EXTRA POINT
Yesterday's anticipated dumping of snow in these parts fizzled out. We had a lot of flurries and a little rain but just a minimal amount of new white stuff accumulate. The sun, of course, was nowhere to be seen.

Yet again this morning the only way to know where the sun is in the sky is to check where our computer-directed solar tracker is pointing. Seriously, this is getting ridiculous.

Rumor is we could see a little sunshine tomorrow. I'm ready.
