Color The Hulk Green

Prior to the Columbia game last season Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens brought in a guest speaker. Teevens later told BGA about the speaker's message:

“He talked about over-producers. The analogy he made was to the guy in the Wall Street firm who’s the first to come in and the last to leave. You want people who are not just doing their job, but are doing more than is asked of them.

“That resonated with me and I brought it up to the team as well. I mentioned (tailback) Tyler Green as a tremendous example of an over-producer. He’s the first guy in and the last guy to leave. It you want to be successful you need a lot of guys like (Green).”

During the preseason, running backs coach Danny O'Dea has this to say in BGA about Tyler Green:

“The way he goes about practice is amazing. He might be the hardest worker in our room and is going to be a factor on special teams. Coach (Sammy McCorkle) talks all the time about his effort.”

Any surprise that the 6-foot, 215-pound running back was honored this way?

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Green keeps working that hard despite having just one rushing attempt as a junior and making three tackles in five games with special teams. He ran for 1,473 yards in his senior year as a high schooler in Kansas. Find his bio HERE.

From the FCS Football site:

FCS biggest gains in winning percentage: 2021 to 2022 seasons

1. Penn: 3-7 (.300) to 8-2 (.800) for +.500 (Liz Musick photo)
2. Samford: 4-7 (.364) to 11-2 (.846) for +.482
3. New Hampshire: 3-8 (.273) to 9-4 (.692) for +.419
4. SE Missouri: 4-7 (.364) to 9-3 (.750) for +.386

Green Alert Take: Interesting that Dartmouth faced two of those teams.

Green Alert Take II: Going from 3-7 to 8-2 in the course of a year is impressive. After its own 3-7 season you can be sure Tyler Green and his teammates want to do Penn one – make that two wins better in 2023. ;-)

This from the Holy Cross football website caught me by surprise (LINK):

Holy Cross and head football coach Bob Chesney have agreed to a restructured contract, keeping the three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year in Worcester through January 31, 2028.

From the story:

Chesney, who previously signed a five-year extension in February 2022, guided the Crusaders to a historic campaign this past fall. The 2022 Crusaders (12-1) recorded the most single-season wins in program history and advanced to the NCAA FCS quarterfinals for the first time since 1983; their lone loss was a hard-fought playoff contest to top-seeded South Dakota State, the eventual national champions.

In five seasons as Holy Cross' head coach, Chesney has led the program to four Patriot League championships and four trips to the NCAA football championship subdivision playoffs.

Green Alert Take: The reason I'm surprised is that between what he's accomplished at Holy Cross and what you read and hear, Chesney would seem to be a prime candidate to have his name surface in a few higher-profile job searches in the next year or two. On the other hand, as the headlines show so often, if the job is high profile-enough, contracts aren't much of an obstacle to overcome.

Speaking of coaching contracts, Brian Kelly got one so off-the-charts from LSU that the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report notes the university didn't realize what it had done until it had overpaid him "by more than $1M in 2022." From the story (LINK):

“(T)he university began making supplemental payments to Kelly’s LLC in May but also continued to make supplemental payments to the coach directly, resulting in monthly double payments until LSU management became aware of the error in November.”

Green Alert Take: It must be nice to be making so much money that on payday you don't even notice you are receiving twice as much money as you are due.

Green Alert Take II: Why doesn't something like that happen to me?

EXTRA POINT
There are no lights on in the BGA World Headquarters as these words are being written. It's just about the first time this month I can say that.

That's right. The sun is finally out and it is glorious.
