Nick Lowery '78 courtesy of Dartmouth College |
Headline from a story on the Yardbarker site: State Your Case: Time to Reconsider Nick Lowery for Canton; The metrics make it clear: No kicker in NFL history outperformed his peers more than the former Chiefs' star. From the story (LINK):
(W)hy should Lowery be mentioned with four kickers often cited as the best ever? Because when you compare accuracy in their respective eras, Nick Lowery was better.
And . . .
In 2017 Chase Stuart of Football Perspective.com, an excellent analytics site, developed his own metric that measures accuracy - a kicker's field-goal percentage above the expected percentage, broken down by 10-yard increments. . . .
"It's not much of a question as to who is the best kicker ever," Stuart wrote. "Until presented with evidence to the contrary, that honor belongs to Nick Lowery."
In his Dartmouth career, Lowery was 51-of-51 on extra points and 22-of-37 on field goals with a long of 51 against Harvard in 1976. Interestingly, his second-longest field goal of 49 yards also came against the Crimson.

Yardbarker has another story headlined The Hidden Gem for the 2023 Cincinnati Bengals about former Princeton wide receiver Andrei Iosiva. The story, like so many others, offers a tidbit that must tease Big Green followers. From the story (LINK):
“Iosivas (Yo-SHE-vas) was a little-known name in high school. He only received offers from Princeton and Dartmouth, opting for the former. “

The Analyst has a piece headlined FCS Prospects to Know for the 2024 NFL Draft that features three Ivy Leaguers among the top six prospects heading into the 2023 college football season, and four players Dartmouth will face this fall. The players mentioned and where they rank nationally are (LINK):
1. Kiran Amegadjie, Yale, Offensive Tackle, 6-5, 321
Preseason Grade: 3rd-4th Round5. Jalen Travis, Princeton, Offensive Tackle, 6-7, 314
Preseason Grade: 6th-7th Round6. Thor Griffith, Harvard, Defensive Tackle, 6-2, 305
Preseason Grade: 6th-7th Round9. Dylan Laube, New Hampshire, Running Back, 5-10, 207
Preseason Grade: 7th Round-Priority Free Agent
Green Alert Take: While an earlier piece by Draft Scout had Travis as a potential sixth-round pick, Griffith as sixth or seventh and Laube as seventh or as a priority free agent, it made no mention of Amegadjie, not only one of the top-20 prospects on this list but the No. 1 prospect. Curious. Find his Yale bio HERE.

Saw a note that Scott Allison is retiring after a long run as athletic director at Roanoke College (LINK). Reading the story offered a reminder about how much women's athletics at Dartmouth have changed over the years. Allison not only was the head coach of Dartmouth men's lacrosse from 1983-85, but he also served as head coach of the women's soccer team over those three years. BJ O'Hara, his successor, also coached both sports during his four years in Hanover.
It wasn't until Steve Swanson arrived in 1990 that Dartmouth had a full-time women's soccer coach.

EXTRA POINT
Well, it happened again.
Another phone call from another caller asking me to get back to him without leaving a number. As noted in this space a few weeks back, there are still a few of us "Landline Luddites" who have no way of knowing your number unless you leave it with your voice message.
As much as it annoys me, I think the time has come to add something to our outgoing message about the need to "leave your number slowly and clearly so we can get back to you."
