Championship Saturday X 2

Two former Dartmouth teammates playing for two different league championships this spring?

That would be Ripley's enough, but consider this:

One plays his home games a 9½ hour flight from the site of his championship game. The other's home games are a 10-hour drive away from the championship venue. And they are playing for their championships just 160 miles apart with kickoffs five hours apart today.

Quarterback/running back Jared Gerbino '20 will be at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio today bidding to help Firenzi Guelfi win Italian Bowl XLII against the Parma Panthers in the league's first championship game ever played on this side of the Atlantic. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

At 8 p.m. offensive lineman Matt Kaskey '19 will be trying to help the Birmingham Stallions defeat the Pittsburgh Maulers in the USFL championship game at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

As an offensive lineman, Kaskey doesn't get a whole lot of ink but if I read the Getty Images terms of service correctly, I'm OK offering up these photos:

Jared Gerbino

As a quarterback and an American Ivy League import who can speak English, Gerbino gets a lot of press and so it was ahead of the Italian Bowl. From a Toledo Blade story (LINK):

“This is super cool,” said Guelfi quarterback Jared Gerbino, a 6-foot-4, 240-pounder who played college football in the Ivy League at Dartmouth.

“[Toledo developer] Nick Eyde did a great job so far organizing the whole thing and bringing it back. He played in the league years ago, and he saw how amazing it was. Being American, as well, it's been such an amazing experience for myself. And, I think it's great for the guys who come over here and play American football, which they really do love and are so passionate about. It's going to be a really cool experience for them to play in a setting like this, in a college stadium.”

And . . .

Gerbino, 24, who said Saturday's Italian Bowl may be his last game as a player in the sport, was twice named second team All-Ivy while at Dartmouth. He has enjoyed his IFL experience.

“The fan base [in Italy] is super passionate, but there's just not as many,” Gerbino said. “It's not as popular a sport in Italy. Usually the championship games get maybe 5,000 or 6,000. That's probably the biggest group of people that these guys have played in front of.

From a Blade story headlined 6 player names to know in the 2023 Italian Bowl (LINK):

Gerbino played at Dartmouth before finding his way to Europe. He led the IFL in passing efficiency after completing 55 of 90 attempts for 821 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He ranked second in the league in rushing with 71 attempts for 655 yards (9.0 average) and 13 touchdowns, while ranking second in total offense (234.7) and first in scoring (84).

The New York native leads an offense that leads the league in scoring (43.1), total offense (459.1) and has scored touchdowns on 91 percent of its red zone trips (32-for-35). Gerbino also handles punting duties with an average of 48.1.

Gerbino's game can be streamed HERE starting at 3 p.m. and Kaskey's game will be on NBC starting at 8 p.m.

While the former players are wrapping up their seasons today current Big Green players on campus have wrapped up their first week of summer drills as this post from Dartmouth's social media reports:

EXTRA POINT
On the first day of our drive out west nearly a month ago we came across light smoke from the Canadian wildfires as we approached Syracuse but were never engulfed in it the way New York City and the Northeast were just a few days later. Coming through Chicagoland just over a week ago there was no smoke but just days later the heavy stuff that will affect the championship games in Ohio settled in. We had dodged it again.

As I look out the window this morning here on our Vermont hillside there's a haze but I can't really tell if it's smoke, a light cloud cover or a combination of the two. The forecast last night said we might have a little smoke blow in but when it's hard to tell what's causing the overcast I'd have to say we're pretty fortunate again.
