Game Day 2

The forecast calls for 65 degrees and cloudy skies with just a one-percent chance of rain at kickoff today in Hanover. The wind will be out of the east at 4 mph.

In last night's Ivy League conference opener . . .

Harvard 34, Brown 31
Defense was a dirty word as Harvard and Brown combined for 911 yards of total offense and 53 first downs in an entertaining game played before 15,838 at Harvard Stadium.

Actually, it was a defensive stand in the second quarter that in the end made the difference. The stout Harvard D-line refused to yield after Brown earned a first down at the five, stoning the visitors on four consecutive runs, the last two from the one-yard line.

Brown led after one quarter, 10-0, only to see the Crimson run off the next 20 points. The Bears made it a three-point game on a TD with 6:41 remaining but never get the ball back as a runner downed himself at the one-foot line and the Crimson ran out the clock.

Harvard quarterback Charles DePrima completed 15-of-26 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 14 times for 98 yards and a score. With Shane  McLaughlin adding 152 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries the Crimson racked up 261 yards on the ground.

Brown quarterback Jake Willcox hit on 36-of-52 passes for 364 yards and one touchdown with Wes Rockett making several circus grabs among his nine catches for 147 yards. The Brown run game managed just 83 yards on 35 carries.

Stories and videos about Buddy Teevens continue to flood the internet. Of particular note was Archie Manning reaching out from France to a reporter before a Mediterranean coast cruise to talk about the former Dartmouth coach who helped start the famed Manning Passing Academy and went on to become a close friend. From the story (LINK)

“Buddy was a special, special person,” Manning said. “He was such a good person and a great coach. He just cared so much about people. I’d do anything for him.”

The New York Times has a story about Teevens HERE

Princeton coach Bob Surace on his First in Football podcast had this to say and do note what I italicized near the end.

My wife and I, we just love the Teevens family. Our heart goes out to them, to the Dartmouth community, athletics, their football program. It's hard.

Football coaches, there's a fraternity and I think in the Ivy League more than anywhere I've ever been, the tightness of our group is special. A good coach when somebody has an injury like Collin (Eaddy) had, will go to the hospital. Buddy didn't just go to the hospital that night. Buddy went the next day. Until Collin was released. Every six hours he went in there, visited him, sent us an update, sent me an update, just going above and beyond. It's just who he is.

Every year, late January, early February, before league meetings, I'd get a call and it was something that he thought would help make the game safer. When we went to no tackling as a league, I got the call. I was not arguing, but I gave a different view. Because at Princeton, we didn't tackle either. This was a competitive advantage, right? If our teams are healthier. If it's just one player, it gives you an edge.

Buddy had the vision to look beyond just a football edge, that this helps save the game, helps save people's brains in terms of lessening concussions. I went back and I felt like crap because he was right. Completely right.  It's just who he is and was as a person. He was an exceptional coach.

I will beat on the door until he gets in the College Football Hall of Fame. Ivy League Bushnell winner, exceptional football coach at Dartmouth and other places, but an even better person.

EXTRA POINT
It's cloudy here in the northern reaches of the Upper Valley this morning but we have a string of days ahead that should be gloriously sunny and warm. Plenty of opportunity to walk behind that dreaded mower and daydream about finding someone who can actually get the electric tractor working again.
