Surprise, Surprise

Here are this week's games featuring Dartmouth opponents, starting with a shocker at Yale Bowl:

Cornell 23, Yale 21
Cornell's Jameson Wang won the quarterback battle, the Big Red's Gannon Carothers won the running back battle and the underdogs rallied from a 14-0 deficit to win the game, upsetting the runaway Ivy League favorites on a 37-yard field goal by Jackson Kennedy on the final play in front of 4,037 at Yale Bowl.

Wang was 26-for-36 for 197 yards and one touchdown and Carothers carried nine times for 95 yards for the Big Red (2-0). Nolan Grooms was just 7-for-18 for 129 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Bulldogs. He ran 15 times for 76 yards to lead Yale (0-2).

The Bulldogs took a 21-20 lead on a fourth-and-20 touchdown pass by Grooms with 3:14 remaining only to see Cornell respond with the 56-yard drive that culminated with Kennedy's third field goal of the game.

Bryant 16, Princeton 13 (OT)
Princeton's John Volker carried 18 times for 149 yards and one touchdown but Bryant's Ethan Gettman nailed a 38-yard field goal with 1:37 left to force overtime and a 37-yarder in the extra session to help his team to an upset victory in the wind and rain in New Jersey.

Gettman's kick in the top half of the overtime gave Bryant the lead and after two Volker runs gained nine yards the Bulldogs stopped Princeton (1-1) quarterback Blake Stenstrom twice for no gain to lock up the win. Bryant (2-2) was coming off a 29-25 home loss to Brown.

Bryant won despite going 4-of-17 on third and and managing just 209 yards of offense. Princeton wasn't that much more productive with 277 yards. Attendance in the rain in New Jersey was 4,004.

Columbia 30, Georgetown 0
Joey Giorgi had 116 of Columbia's 222 yards on the ground, Caden Bell made his 11 completions count for 189 yards, JJ Jenkins caught four passes for 119 yards and the Lion defense recorded its first home shutout since 2006.

Columbia (1-1) limited Georgetown (2-2) to 32 yards rushing on 24 carries and outgained the visitors, 411 yards to 167 in total offense.

Special teams played a big role in setting Columbia up in good field position with Carter McFadden returning the opening kickoff 48 yards and adding punt returns of 35 and 25 yards in front of 3,197 in New York City.

Penn 37, Bucknell 21
Aidan Sayin went 35-for-49 for 354 yards and three touchdowns and a stifling defense limited the home team to eight yards rushing as the Quakers (2-0) piled up 515 yards of total offense and a 23-minute advantage in time of possession.

Jared Richardson had 12 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns for Penn, which got 64 yards and one touchdown rushing from Jonathan Mulatu on 11 carries.

Bucknell (1-2) QB Ralph Rucker was 18-for-34 for 230 yards and dented the Penn secondary with three touchdown passes, the last with 56 seconds to play.

Attendance in the rain Lewisburg, Pa., was 2,046.

Delaware 29, New Hampshire 25
The Wildcats jumped out to an 18-0 lead just two minutes into the second quarter only to see Delaware roar back for the win in front of 10,618 in Newark.

The Blue Hens fashioned a 22-18 lead on a three-play, 62-yard drive to open the second half only to see Dylan Laube push the visitors back in front with a 100-yard return on the ensuing kickoff.

Delaware (3-1) regained the lead on a 30-yard TD run late in the third quarter and won the game with a fourth-down hold at its own two early in the final quarter and an interception at its own 35 on the next possession.

Quarterback Max Brosmer with 34-for-58 for 387 yards and two touchdowns for UNH (2-2) but Laube was a non-factor in the run game with eight yards on eight carries and just 24 yards on seven receptions.

Holy Cross 47, Colgate 7
Holy Cross got a 41-yard touchdown run on its first possession but Colgate answered with quarterback Michael Brescia running eight yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7 late in the first quarter. It was all Holy Cross the rest of the way as the Crusaders reeled off the next 40 points.

Matthew Sluka threw four touchdown passes and Holy Cross added 317 yards and three touchdowns rushing while piling up 507 yards of total offense.

The Raiders (0-4) got 125 yards passing from Brescia with Zach Osborne running for 44 yards on six carries to lead their ground game. Holy Cross (3-1) now has 18 consecutive Patriot League wins and 19-consecutive victories over FCS opponents in regular-season play. Attendance at Fitton Feld in the rain was 12,578.

And in case you missed it yesterday:

Harvard 34, Brown 31
Defense was a dirty word as Harvard and Brown combined for 911 yards of total offense and 53 first downs in an entertaining game played before 15,838 at Harvard Stadium.

Actually, it was a defensive stand in the second quarter that in the end made the difference. The stout Harvard D-line refused to yield after Brown earned a first down at the five, stoning the visitors on four consecutive runs, the last two from the one-yard line.

Brown led after one quarter, 10-0, only to see the Crimson run off the next 20 points. The Bears made it a three-point game on a TD with 6:41 remaining but never get the ball back as a runner downed himself at the one-foot line and the Crimson ran out the clock.

Harvard quarterback Charles DePrima completed 15-of-26 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 14 times for 98 yards and a score. With Shane  McLaughlin adding 152 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries the Crimson racked up 261 yards on the ground.

Brown quarterback Jake Willcox hit on 36-of-52 passes for 364 yards and one touchdown with Wes Rockett making several circus grabs among his nine catches for 147 yards. The Brown run game managed just 83 yards on 35 carries.

EXTRA POINT
As these words make it into the ether Robo, our robotic vacuum cleaner, is hard at work downstairs. The thing had been on the DL because it apparently had decided spinning in place was more fun than wandering around the downstairs. After a few days of collecting tumbleweeds of Golden Retriever fur the old-fashioned way while Robo was out-of-commission, I cleaned its undercarriage and infrared sensor and now for two days in a row it has behaved quite nicely. Here's hoping it stays in service.
