Each year the New England Football Writers ask me to be the Gold Helmet selector for the outstanding performance in the region in Division I and Division II-III one week. It's a responsibility I take seriously, and almost always a headache. There are usually at least a half dozen DII-III players who put up mind-boggling numbers while it's a struggle to find someone in DI.

Last week, maybe for the first time in all the year's I've been the selector, it was the opposite. There really wasn't much to choose from in DII-III and there were a good number of DI candidates. The latter included Yale defensive back Sean Guyton, who had two interceptions including a 70-yard "pick six" against Dartmouth as well as a tackle for loss among his three stops.

I agonized over my DI choice because the obvious choice had won the Gold Helmet just two weeks earlier and all other things being equal it's a good thing to share the wealth. But I finally decided they weren't equal and picked Harvard quarterback Charles DePrima. He had run nine times for 152 yards with three touchdowns (one of 58 and one of 42 yards) and completed 12-of-19 passes for 209 yards with touchdown passes of 36, 19 and 17 yards, and without an interception.

I was still a little uncomfortable picking someone who earned the award just two weeks before until I read this morning that he was the national offensive player of the week. Seeing that I'm sure I would have felt like I'd made a mistake if I hadn't picked him.

And in case you were wondering, I had to pore over more box scores than you could imagine to zero in on the DII-III choice. I finally went with a DII linebacker who had 20 tackles (14 unassisted), two sacks, three tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry.

EXTRA POINT
Mrs. BGA sometimes calls me Monk after the TV detective with OCD. It's true I've been known to straighten the occasional picture frame from time to time among other things, and I will admit I do like symmetry.

This is one Mrs. BGA won't know about until she reads it here.

Someone sent me an email yesterday with a typo in it. The typo, of course, reappeared in the blue sender's text above my response. I couldn't help myself. I fixed it.

I always debate doing that but almost always end up fixing the typo. Pretty ridiculous, I guess. But I make so many typos that I can't help myslef.
