Catching Up

Missed this one earlier this winter . . .

Mike Bruno, who as a young Dartmouth nickels coach (LINK) occasionally amused players with how aggressive he was demonstrating his tackling on dummies, has started his second stint at Cal, this time as a defensive analyst:

Bruno was at Dartmouth from 2011-15 and was most recently defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Minot State, a Division II school in North Dakota.

Since graduating from St. Lawrence in 2009, he coached for two years at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), has worked a Dartmouth, was a grad assistant at Mississippi State in 2016, served as a defensive quality control coach at Louisville in '17, was a  defensive quality control coach at Cal from 2018 until 2021, and was inside linebackers coach at UNLV in 2022 before heading to North Dakota.

Several days ago someone posted on YouTube an "all-22 coaches cut of the Cornell Big Red Offense vs the Dartmouth Big Green Defense in 2018." Highlight films often show up but video like this is a little more unusual so it's worth at least a cursory look.

As background, Dartmouth won the game, 35-24, on its way to a 9-1 record. Linebacker Nigel Alexander had 14 tackles and David Emanuels had 11 in this game. Isiah Swann had an interception and Jake Moeyn had 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.

EXTRA POINT
If you went to Dartmouth or visit the area, you're probably familiar with the term "Upper Valley" to describe where the college is located. But do you know the history of the term "Upper Valley," or what it actually entails? Brave Little State, the Vermont Public podcast, did a half hour program about the Upper Valley, which it describes as . . .

"a cross-border region that includes parts of far-eastern Vermont and far-western New Hampshire. It’s a long way from the political and cultural centers of both states — so much so, that it kind of feels like a third state in and of itself."

Can't disagree with that.

For the record, the nomenclature "Upper Valley" was introduced by the founders of the local Valley News, who just happened to have a Dartmouth affiliation. That may be part of the reason why some people from outside the region believe the area centered around Hanover, Norwich and Lebanon might better be called the "Uppity" Valley.
