Dartmouth South

Scanning the 2024 UMass Football Transfer Portal Tracker yesterday revealed that two-time Dartmouth assistant Don Brown is getting not one, but two former Big Green players this time around.

Joining linebacker Macklin Ayers in heading to Amherst is defensive back Leonard St. Gourdin. As a result of COVID, both players could have had another year of eligibility at Dartmouth by rearranging their academic schedules but instead opted to graduate on time and test the waters elsewhere.

The two follow in the footsteps of linebacker Jalen Mackie '22, who led the Minutemen in tackles by a wide margin a couple of years ago.

All totaled, UMass is welcoming 20 grad transfers and bidding farewell to nine. The Minutemen were 3-9 last fall and open this season Aug. 31 at Eastern Michigan. Highlighting the schedule are an Oct. 1 home date against Missouri, a Nov. 2 game at Mississippi State and a Nov. 23 game at Georgia.

EXTRA POINT
The mercury (silicon?) could hit 50 degrees in our little Vermont town tomorrow. If possible rain holds off it will be nice to get outside and stroll on our dirt road.

If the rain comes, we may not be leaving the house. Not in the car, at least. The mud was pretty nasty yesterday, and with rain it could be treacherous tomorrow.

For the record, we are already in our second "mud season" of the year.

I very nearly didn't make it home from a hike during a warm spell last month. Even taking a detour out of an abundance of caution I had to gun the motor and hold on for dear life when water-filled ruts got too deep. I had visions of abandoning the car to walk home and call AAA to get towed out of the oatmeal.

When the mud got deep again yesterday I messaged Mrs. BGA about picking the right line and keeping her speed up on our hill.

The traditional mud season in these parts is in March. I can only hope Mother Nature is using up some of her fury early this year and it won't be as nasty as usual.
