Who Knew?

Former Dartmouth offensive lineman Jake Guidone '21, who was a standout grad transfer at UConn and then went to camp with the Baltimore Ravens, will be back in uniform soon, although probably one that will catch you by surprise:

Guidone will be with the Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League when they open the season March 17 at the Green Bay Blizzard.

The IFL, which plays eight-man football on a 50-yard field, features 16 teams that play from coast-to-coast and has been a proving ground for players hoping to return to traditional football. Find a list of players who have gone on from the Massachusetts team HERE.

The current roster includes players from Oklahoma State, Miami, Rutgers, Utah, Cincinnati and Penn State among others.

The Pirates play their games at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, which can seat 6,500 for indoor football and hockey. (The center is named in honor of former US. senator and 1992 presidential candidate Paul Tsongas, a 1962 Dartmouth graduate.)

And finally, kudos to the person who pulled together the league website for this gem:

The Indoor Football League is America’s longest continuously-running indoor football league and is the second-longest running professional football league in the U.S., after only the National Football League. The IFL was founded in 2009 and begins its 16th consecutive season of play in 2024.

Headline: It Was Mike Slive's SEC Grand Slam - Greg Sankey's Just Rounding the Bases. From a story about the role Slive '62 (a classmate of Paul Tsongas) played in the rise of the SEC (LINK):

As Bill Parcells would say, “You are what your record says you are.” Slive died as the GOAT of college commissioners.

Lots of stories with different headlines say essentially what this AP headline says: Dartmouth men's basketball team to hold union vote March 5: (LINK)

Green Alert Take: Spoiler alert. They didn't come this far not to vote to join the union.

EXTRA POINT
For Christmas, That Certain Dartmouth '14 gave us a pickleball set. While there is a court at the little elementary school in town it's either been snow-covered or too cold to get out and hit the ball around. With our driveway cleared of snow and the temperature sneaking just over 40 degrees Mrs. BGA and I finally broke out the paddles yesterday and fashioned an unorthodox net to rally back-and-forth.

We've got some sidewalk chalk to sketch out a court and a few ideas about how to improve the "net" so we can work on our games.
