Our USA Rail Pass cost $450 when we bought it last winter, on sale from $499. Mrs. BGA crunched the numbers and if we had bought individual tickets for our month-long, ± 9,000-mile trip it would have cost us $1,387. If we had gotten a sleeper compartment? All I know is that the 1,847-mile trip from the Bay Area to Chicago alone would have started at $1,481.
